For The Year Ending December 31, 1990 with Report of SCHOOL DISTRICT For The Year Ending June 30, 1990 DEDICATION For many years Hollis organizations have sponsored activities which have benefited the town as awhole andthe participants as a group. Ourcoverfeaturesrepresentativesofsomeoftheseorganiza- tions, includingthepoliceandfiredepartmentswhofrequentlypar- ticipate behind the scenes. The 1990 town report is dedicated to all volunteer Hollis organizations but in particular to those who make possible the Strawberry Festival, Apple Festival, and the Christmas Holiday Stroll. In 1943the HollisTownBand (thenknownasthe HollisChurch School Band) decided to have a Strawberry Festival. Originally, the families ofband members hulled the strawberries, made the short- cakesand, withthehelpofotherinterestedpeople, putonthe Straw- berryFestival. Asthefestivalgrewinscope, theHollisWoman'sClub joinedwiththebandtomakethisamostworthwhile andsuccessful event.ThefestivaldrawsseveralthousandpeopleonthelastSunday in June. Priorto 1964theHollisTownBandalsoplayedconcertsinthefall to a smaller audience. Apple pies, apple crisp and applesauce cake were added and, on the first Sunday in October, the Apple Festival was born. As with the Strawberry Festival, the Apple Festival has grownthroughtheyearsandtheWoman'sClubhasjoinedforceswith thebandtosponsoranotherverysuccessfulevent.Proceedsfromboth festivals are used for scholarships andto help defray band expense. Itshouldbenotedherethattwoofourpoliceofficersdonatetheirtime todirecttrafficatthefestivals, inadditiontothepolicewhoarehired to work. TheColonialGardenClubofHolliswasformedin 1966andhas hostedseveralHollyWalksinearlyDecember, atwhichtimevarious membersdecoratedtheirhomesinaholidaymotiffortheenjoyment ofthe public. In 1989 and 1990 the Garden Club held a Holiday Stroll in lieu ofaHollyWalk. Thisendeavorenlistedthehelpofmanyothertown organizations: FriendsoftheLibrary, HollisBrownieTroop#10, Hollis CongregationalChurch, HollisDayExtension, HollisEveningExten- sion, HollisFire Department, HollisGirlScoutCadets, HollisGrange, Hollis Historical Society, Hollis Police Department, Hollis Woman's Club, Maple Hill Gardeners ofBeaverbrook and the Senior Citizens ofHollis. Publicbuildingsandprivateresidencesinthecenteroftown weredecoratedforthisHolidayStrollandtheeffectwasmostfestive. The Colonial Garden Club has, for many years, decorated the towncommonfortheHolidaySeason. Memberspickfreshgreensand thenmeettomakethewreathsandotherdecorationswhicharehung on town buildings. Volunteers from the Hollis Fire Department use the town ladder truck to hang the wreath at the Always Ready En- gineCompanyandtodecorate otherelevatedareasaroundthecom- mon. Aftertheholidaystheyfaithfullyreturntotakedownthedeco- rations. In addition, the Garden Club sponsors a plant sale in conjunctionwiththeHollisLibrary'sBookSaleinearlyMay.Thepro- ceeds from this activity help defray the cost of the holiday decorat- ing on the common and the springplantings around town buildings along with other Garden Club events. Hollis is indeed a fortunate community to have in its midst so manycivic mindedgroupsandindividuals-allofwhomgiveunself- ishlyoftheirtime and talent to make ourtown a wonderfulplace in which to live and raise a family.
