PREFACE ' • I This book was written in Aberdeen and has gone through the press while I have been teaching at the University of Virginia Law School. Professor David Daube read the first six chapters in draft and made many valuable criticisms of their substance. My wife read the whole1 work and purged some,, at least, of its defects of form. Mr. G. P. Edwards gave me useful advice o~ ancient grammar. The publi~hei:s have accepted cheerfully the difficulties caused by my absence from Scotland. To all of them I am sincerely grateful.
