Belize has one ofthe richest pteridophyte floras in the world, expressed on an area basis. Analysis ofrecent collectionsandthewidelyscatteredliteratureforthecountryrevealsthatthenumberofspecieshasrisenbyapproximately20% sincethepublicationofthemajorregionalflora,FloraMesoamericana,in1995.Investigationofthedatesofdiscoveryforeach taxonproducesagraphthatindicatesmanymoretaxaareyettobediscoveredinthecountry.Apreliminaryassessmentismade ofareasinBelizelikelytorevealnewrecords.
