As a geriatric psychiatrist, psychotherapy practitioner, and professor of psychiatry at the University of California, over the past 30 years I have witnessed first-hand the impact of ageistbeliefsandactionsonthelivesofcountlesspatientsinwhosecareIhaveparticipated. Oneofmygreatestdisappointmentshasbeenappreciatinghowtheadage“Youcan’tteach anolddognewtricks”remainssodeeplyimbeddedinourculture.Whenteachingstudents, residents, fellows, and colleagues, I repeat, as often as circumstances permit, that in my opinion there are only three essential ingredients required for successful psychotherapy: some degree of preserved ability to learn, motivation to change, and access to a coach, which could take the form of a self-help book, a trained therapist, or the combination of thesetwo.Iemphasizethatnoneofthesecriteriahasanythingtodowithchronologicalage. Withthisinmind,IwasbothdelightedandhonoredwhenRajTampiandhiscoeditors, all of whom are highly respected colleagues as well as dear friends, asked me to write this foreword. Along with the group of talented and accomplished geriatric mental health experts whomtheyengagedtohelpthemwiththisproject, theyhavecreatedaninvaluableresource for those whose work includes addressing the mental health needs of older adults. As someone who recently turned 60, and by the account of many should have put aside my adolescentidealism,Istillholduptheutopian beliefthatageism, whetherdirectedtoward thosewhoareoldorthosewhoareyoung, hasnoplaceinourworld.Iamdeeplygratified to note that the experienced editors and expert authors of this book span the entire spectrum of career stage. Regardless of age or career stage, it deserves mention that some of the authors have acquired firsthand experience with the psychotherapeutic challenges aboutwhichtheyarewriting, asbothprovidersofcareandrecipientsofcare.Thisdepthof experience is reflected in the accurate perspectives and compassionate tone that inform theirwriting.Inasimilarmanner, assomeonewhohasspentmyentirecareerworkingasa memberofaninterprofessionalclinicalteam,Iamalsodeeplygratifiedbythediversityin discipline and specialty reflected in those who contributed to this effort. Its varying perspectives form anothersignificant strengthof this book. Althoughafewotherbooksonthistopichavebeenwrittenoverthepast20years,none is as thoughtfully organized, comprehensive, well researched, and up-to-date as this add- itiontotheliterature.Theauthorsclearlyoutlinetheindicationsforpsychotherapyaswell as provide guidance for choosing among the various psychotherapy modalities. This textbook, unlike others in this area, covers each of the major schools of psychotherapy. In addition, I especially appreciate the chapter on combining psycho- therapy and medication interventions. Given the clinical complexity encountered when working with many older adults, using all ofthetools inour toolbox isessential.Even for practitioners who limit their interventions to only pharmacologic or only psychothera- peutic, the knowledge contained in this book will benefit older patients by helping mental health care providers both coordinate and reinforce each other’sefforts.
