A total of350universityathletes,consistingof199malesand151femalesfrom9contact sportsand14noncontactsportsparticipatedinthisstudy.Themeasurementmodel wasfirsttestedforinternalreliability, constructreliability, convergentvalidity, and discriminantvalidityforallconstructs.Theresultsofstructuralmodelshowedthat athletes’ perception of coaches’ leadership was significantly related with athletes’ basic psychological needs, and subsequently, athletes’ basic psychological needs weresignificantlyrelatedwithathletes’motivation.PLS-MGAresultsindicatedthat therewasasignificantmoderationeffectofgenderonrelationshipbetweenathletes’ perceptionofcoachleadershipandathletes’psychologicalneeds.Similarly, thetypes of sports significantly moderated the relationship between athletes’ psychological needs and athletes’ motivation. As a conclusion, coaches’ leadership style has an influenceonthepsychologicalneedssatisfactionoftheathletes, andthissubsequently affectsathletes’motivation. However, theserelationshipswerebeingmoderatedby genderandtypesofsports, respectively.Hence, coachesmusttakeintoconsideration thegenderfactorandthetypesofsportswhentrainingtheathletes. · · Keywords Coaches’leadership Athletes’basicpsychologicalneeds Athletes’ · · motivation Gender Typesofsports B K.M.Kee( )·A.S.H.Ismail FacultyofSportScienceandRecreation,UniversitiTeknologiMARA,ShahAlam,Malaysia e-mail:[email protected] ©SpringerNatureSingaporePteLtd.2019 3 N.Sulaimanetal.(eds.),Proceedingsofthe3rdInternational ColloquiumonSportsScience,Exercise,EngineeringandTechnology, https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-10-6772-3_1 4 K.M.KeeandA.S.H.Ismail 1 Introduction Athleteshavethedesiretobethebestandsuccessfulintheirsports.Inordertobe successful, theyoftenhavetogothroughgreatsacrificessuchastimewithfamily, friends, andevenpersonaltime.Yetthesepersonalsacrificesarenottheonlyfactors thatdetermineathletes’success.Somestudiessaidthatsocialenvironmentsuchas coachleadershiphasasignificantimpactonathletes’success[1,2].Effectivecoach- ingleadershipemphasizesoncreatingamotivationalenvironmentthatencourages athletesorteamstoperformtowardtheirfullpotential[3].Coachingleadershiphas beencharacterizedintofivedimensions, namely, trainingandinstruction, democratic behavior,autocraticbehavior,socialsupport,andpositivefeedback[4]. The success of athletes is also influenced by their basic psychological needs. Human psychological needs is a behavior deriving from the individuals’ true self whichresultsinhigherlevelsofbehavioralself-determinationwhenbeingsatisfied [5]. Deci and Vansteenkiste [6] stated that athletes have a greater sport motivation whenallthethreepsychologicalneeds(needofcompetence,autonomy,andrelat- edness)arebeingsatisfied.Effectivecoachesoftencreateopportunitiesthathelpto fulfillathletes’psychologicalneedsandleadthemtohaveagreaterself-determination towardpositivemotivationaloutcomessuchaspersistentparticipation.Inaddition, therelationshipbetweencoachingleadershipandmotivationissaidtobeingmedi- atedbythesethreeinnatepsychologicalhumanneeds.Paststudieshaveshownthat motivatedathletesexhibitpositiverelationshipswiththefulfillmentoftheneedof autonomy,competence,andrelatedness[7].Previousstudieshavealsoindicatedthat thesepsychologicalneedsareuniquebetweengenders,andhence,coachingleader- shipstylemightvaryformalesandfemalesinordertosatisfydifferentpsychological needsinsport[8].Inaddition,thetypesofsportsmightalsoinfluenceathletes’psy- chologicalneeds.Forexample,contactsportsmayrequiredifferentmind-set(e.g., moreaggressive)asthelevelofaggressionisbeingprojectedaspartofthecharac- teristics of the contact sport itself. Most of the studies on coaching leadership have been conducted in advanced or developed countries such as Northern America and Europe. However, it is not clear whether coaches in Malaysia which have very different cultural values will exhibitsimilarpatternsofleadershipinsports.Inaddition, itappearsthatcoaching leadershipinsportsinMalaysiahasnotbeenfullyexplored.Nostudyhasyetbeen sightedlocallythatexaminetherelationshipofcoachingleadershipandpsycholog- icalneedsonathletes’motivationinsportasproposedbyHollembeakandAmorose [10].Hence,inresponsetothecurrentissues,thepurposeofthisstudywastoexam- inetherelationshipbetweentheathletes’perceptionofcoaches’leadership(CL)and athletes’psychologicalneeds(BPN)ontheathletes’motivation(AM).Specifically,
