Bewoor, Rajkumar Bhimgonda Patil, and Mohamed Arezki Mellal Index ......................................................................................................................273 Preface Technological innovation has created opportunities to monitor and measure the per- formance of engineering systems with broader enterprise operations, such as manu- facturing operations, service logistics, maintenance management, and after-sales services. The technological revolution demands methodologies and solutions which are capable of analysing and modelling to support and facilitate optimal decision- making policies. Combined with state-of-the-art, real-time optimization techniques, nearly instantaneous decisions can be computed in fast-changing business environ- ments unlocking significant cost-savings. Thus predictive analytics plays a vital role in technological innovation. Predictive analytics is the practice of extracting informa- tion from existing data sets in order to determine patterns and predict future out- comes and trends. Predictive analytic tools are capable of synthesizing and extracting information from existing systems to the forecast future performance of systems. Optimization models compute optimal decisions by leveraging the information embedded in the data. The development of modern methodologies allows for effi- cient updating when information changes, as well as automatic model calibration using techniques from machine learning, information theory, and statistics. This book presents state-of-the-art predictive analytics and optimization in the areas of system reliability, quality, supply chain management, and logistics. This book helps companies overcome the challenges posed by increasingly complex systems in today’s competitive marketplace. Examining both research on and practical aspects of prod- ucts, the book features contributions written by active researchers and/or experienced practitioners in the field so as to effectively bridge the gap between theory and practice and address new research challenges in system reliability, quality, supply chain man- agement, and logistics management in practice. The topic is also covered in most of the international scientific conferences, seminars, and workshops. These facts provide suf- ficient evidence for the increasing interest in this scientific area. All the chapters in the book are written by leading researchers and practitioners in their respective fields of expertise and present various innovative methods, approaches, and solutions not cov- ered before in the literature. The book would be useful to senior graduate and postgraduate students, as well as research scholars. Of course, it can also be used as a reference book by academicians, scientists, engineers, and managers working in different organizations.
