He receivedhisABfromPrincetonUniversitywithhighesthonors,followedbyaPhD inMathematicsfromtheUniversityofCaliforniaatBerkeley. AsaMooreInstructoratMIT,Axlerreceivedauniversity-wideteachingaward. Hewasthenanassistantprofessor,associateprofessor,andprofessorintheMath- ematics Department at Michigan State University, where he received the first J.
