P ref ace I became interested in posture in my early twenties. When I was a teenager, 1 grew several inches over one summer. This made me taller than most of the girls my age and most of the boys as well. 1 didn’t like that at all. As a result, I slumped on purpose so I would fit in better. Then 1 reached my twenties and being tall suddenly wasn’t so bad. But, unfor tunately, a lot of damage was already done. I remember running into an old high school friend who showed me pictures taken at a high school party. I was shocked and horrified to see how slumped my upper back had become and how rounded my shoulders were. 1 knew I wasn’t born this way and that I had done this to myself. So I set out to see if 1 could undo this damage. Was it possible to get my shoulders straight again? Was it possible to take that unsightly slump out of my upper back so my head wouldn’t protrude so far forward? By trial and error, I found that not only was it possible, it wasn’t even that difficult. This is the information I am so proud to share with you. When I decided to put all this info in book form, my agent shopped it around to all the publishing houses in New York City. One of the publishers we contacted happened to be having a lot of trouble with his neck. When he read the chapter on the ABCs of Computer Comfort, he took my advice and re-arranged his computer screen, monitor, and computer chair. Within the first week of doing so, he discovered his neck and back felt much better. He was thrilled to find my advice worked so quickly and so well, and we were thrilled to find that he wanted to publish my book. What he liked best was the fact that the advice contained within was simple to implement. He didn’t have to go out and buy new furniture. He just had to re-arrange the furniture he already had to make working at his computer infinitely more comfortable. The beauty of this book lies in its simplicity. All of the tips, techniques and exercises are simple yet extremely effective. I wrote this book for every male and female who thought it was impossible to correct his or her posture. I wanted everyone to see that no matter how bad their posture may be or how long they’ve had poor posture, it is never too late. You can improve your posture, and in the process not only look better, but also rid yourself of a whole array of common aches and pains. Improving posture is simply a matter of becoming aware of a few things, such as how you stand, sit, and move, then strengthening the muscles that have become too weak and stretching ones that have become too tight and overburdened. It is quite simple. I am extremely grateful to all the people who have come through my work shops for they have helped me perfect my program. Over the years they’ve told me which of my techniques and exercises helped them the most and which needed to be tweaked to become more user-friendly. Because of them, this is an extremely effective program that will have you standing straighter in no time at all. x
