The defeat of Edwina Currie"s amendment to the Criminal justice Bill
for an eq)ual age of consent of 16 was a shameful act of collective
homopho ia by MPs. The defeat is more than a setback for young gay
men: a deliberate snub to all gays, lesbians and bisexuals.
In the Midlands a majority of MPs supported

was Ioe Ashton who, in his unmistakeably wily

the other Labour l\§P to vote against 16 and he is
now facin ressures to resign as front bench

1 Health considerations
Edwina Currie MP had been one of the
main arguments put
forward for 16.
With the Stonewall campaign targetted at
‘Yes for 16’ - a strategy which almost paid off -
the tactics on 18 were ignored. Iohn Hep ell
(above) however, voted tacticly to defeat 15 A
no-to-18 proposition might have been difficult
to organise, but the failure of 18 after the defeat
of 16 would have led to an unstoppable build
up for change in which compromises would
have stood no chance. Many hopes are now John Heppell MP J

will cease to operate: NORMAL PUB HOURS will
continue MONDAY - SUNDAY. Obviously member-

Our regular Quiz Night on Wednesdays will
continue, along with the new format of a Snowball
Question, also Bingo on Thursdays. There will be a
Disco Free Zone after the 2nd April for a period of
time to see how the changes take effect. We intend to
provide from time to time “special” nights of music
or entertainment during normal licensing hours.
By way of thanking the members that renewed
last year we will be holding a PARTY NIGHT on the
2nd April, to include FREE ADMISSION with
BUFFET and DISCO to members. A charge will be
made for non-members /guests on the night. The bar
will be open until 1.30am.
We are planning changes in the layout of the rear
of the premises: a No Smoking lounge area which
may be used for meetings will be available and the
pool table will be moved to a larger room giving us
opportunities for regular competitions or even regain
a Team Spirit amongst some of you. A television area
is also planned and Sky channels available together
with the possibility of Film Nights being organised.
