In Toronto’s churches and schools, and here at the University of Toronto, the Oratorio Ensembles Class embraces its mission, “We sing to our city!” The class is comprised of fourth-year undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. The singers meet for two hours weekly to develop their study and performance of solo and ensemble literature from oratorio masterworks. In this, they learn to tell the stories of the ages – of love and loss, celebration and despair. They also advance their performance and musicianship skills, and become familiar with professional oratorio training and performance. For our performance schedule, we invite you to join us on our OraSTORYo Facebook Page. Please also join us at 7:30 on April 6th, at St. Basil’s Church, 50 St. Joseph St., as part of St. Basil’s Family Concert Series, with Music of Lent and Easter. Translation Capsules From Mendelssohn’s Elijah: - Do not worship false gods. I, your God, will comfort you. Don’t be afraid! - Those who have insight will shine brightly like the bright expanse of Heaven; sadness and grief will forever disappear. From Handel’s Judas Maccabæus: - We must escape this dark oppression of our people. Where should we go? - We will not sing to Zeus. We join with the angels to raise our instruments and voices to God. - Father, with this Feast of Lights, see how we praise you! - We go to battle for freedom and freedom to praise God! From Mendelssohn’s Sacred Duets: - In God’s hands are the depths of the earth and the peaks of the mountains. - I waited for God; he listened to me and heard my complaint. Those who trust Him are blessed. - How holy is the Child. God protects Him, and He protects us, too. - Where have you carried Jesus and buried his body so we can find him? From Chaminade’s Mass for Two Equal Voices: - Lord have mercy on us. Christ have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us. - Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth. You take away the sins of the world! - Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, give us peace. From Massenet’s The Virgin AND from Couture’s John the Baptist: - The angel Gabriel visits Mary and tells her she will be the mother of the Son of God. Mary is humbled and overwhelmed with joy. From Puccini’s Messa di Gloria: - We give thanks to You, Lord, for Your great glory. From Mozart’s Mass in C minor: - God, Heavenly Father of your only Son and the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. - And God became personified in a living body by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary. - Only You are holy and the most high Jesus Christ, together with the Holy Ghost and the Glory of God the Father.
