This Symposium wasdedicatedtotheAcademicianoftheNationalAcademyofSciences(NAS)of Armenia,Prof.EduardKazaryan,ontheoccasionofhis80thbirthday.Therefore,it isnotaccidentalthatmanyoftheissuesdiscussedatthesymposiumconcernedtopics within the research field covered by the work of Prof. Kazaryan and his scientific group.ThesymposiumwasopenedwithareportbyProf.HaykA.Sarkisyanfrom theRussian-ArmenianUniversityinYerevandedicatedtothescientificactivitiesand themainscientificresultsofProf.EduardKazarian. Thesymposiumwasattendedby85participantsfromArmenia,France,Germany, Iran,Italy,Mongolia,Poland,Russia,UkraineandUSA.Seethegroupphotoshown innextpage. During 5 days a total of 50 reports were presented, 9 of them in plenary talks. Special sessions were organized for student presentations and for poster presenta- tions.Theprizeforthe“BestStudentTalk”wasawardedtoMs.AstghikTorosyan fromtheLaboratoryofInformationTechnologiesattheJINRDubna,Russia. The program of the symposium included reports on the optical properties of solids, opticsofatoms, opticalprocessesinsemiconductornanostructures, problems of propagation of electromagnetic waves invarious media, issues of technological growthofsemiconductornanostructuresandstudiesoftheiropticalcharacteristics. Amongtheinvitedreports,biginterestwasraisedbythetalkon“Current-induced Optical Activity: First Observation and Comprehensive Study” by Prof. Vadim Shalygin from the St. Petersburg Polytechnical University, which was dedicated totheelectro-opticalanalogueofthemagneto-opticalFaradayeffect. A special session by Prof. Andrey Varlamov from the Tor Vergata University of Rome, dedicated to the popularization of physics, was also received with great resonance. v vi Preface GroupPhotooftheParticipantsatthe9thSymposium“Optics&itsApplications” 1.VahagnAbgaryan,2.AstghikTorosyan,3.AlexanderGusev,4.OchbadrakhChuluunbaatar,5. On the other hand, experimental resultswerediscussedonfar, midandnearinfraredphotoconductivityphenomenain GaAs/AlGaAsquantumwells.Alsowerepresentedtheresultsofadetailedstudyof nucleationprocesses, characterizationandopticalpropertiesofgradedgapquantum dots. Based on the results of the Symposium, 17 representative articles have been selectedforpublicationinthepresentvolumeofProceedings. M. Kazaryan was born on January 16, 1942, in the family of the famous ArmenianjournalistMusheghKazaryan.Duringhisschoolyears, thefuturephysics professorfacedtheproblemofchoosingbetweenasportscareerasafootballplayer (in 1958 he was included in the USSR national football team for school return Fig.1 ProfessorEduardKazaryan ix x EduardKazaryan—Biography Fig.2 FirstpaperofEduardKazaryan players) and an academic career as a physicist. Initially, the choice was in favor of football, but Eduard’s father insisted on his son’s scientific career, and Eduard Kazaryan was enrolled in the Physics Department of Yerevan State University in 1959.Inhisthirdyearofstudy,EduardKazaryanbecameoneofthebeststudents and was sent to continue his studies at the leading University of the USSR at the MoscowStateUniversity, theDepartmentofSemiconductorPhysicsattheFaculty ofPhysics. Here, attheMoscowStateUniversity, theyoungEduardtakeshisfirst stepsinscienceunderthesupervisionofV.L.Bonch-Bruevich,oneofthefamous specialistsoftheSovietUnioninthephysicsofsemiconductors. Professor Bonch-Bruevich was a representative of the world-famous scientific schoolofNikolaiBogolyubov,whichwasoneofthemostpowerfulcentersoftheo- reticalphysicsintheUSSR.Duringtheseyears, intensiveresearchwascarriedout onthephysicalpropertiesofsemiconductorsbasedonthemethodsofquantumfield theory. Therefore, itwasnotaccidentalthatthestudentKazaryanreceivedthetask tostudytheplasmonabsorptionmechanismbyasemiconductorwithindirectband structure,basedonthemethodsofGreen’sfunctions.E.Kazaryancopedwiththetask brilliantly.Atthesametime,theresultturnedouttobesointeresting,thatProf.Dirk ter Haar, the editor of the international journal Physics Letters, invited to urgently publishitinthisauthoritativeedition.Soat23,EduardKazaryanbecametheauthor (atthesametime, theonlyauthor)ofascientificpublicationon“Indirecttransitions duetotheCoulombinteractions”inoneofthemostfamousinternationaljournals. In1966,aftergraduatingwithhonorsfromtheFacultyofPhysicsoftheMoscow State University, Kazaryan started the postgraduate degree under Prof. Bonch- Bruevich’s supervision. After completing his postgraduate studies in 1969, he defendedhisPh.D.thesisonsemiconductorphysics. In 1970 began Kazaryan’s active scientific and didactic career in Armenia. Duringtheseyears,thephysicsoflow-dimensionalsemiconductorsbegantodevelop and Eduard Kazaryan immediately understood and appreciated the prospects and importance of these studies, becoming the founder of theoretical nanophysics in Armenia. Already in 1971, the journal Soviet Physics—Semiconductors (Fizika i Tekhnika Poluprovodnikov) published an article by E. M. Kazaryan and R.
