J.ENTOMOL.SOC.BRIT.COLUMBIA99,DECEMBER2002 81 Occurrence of the spider mite predator Stethoruspunctillum (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in the Pacific Northwest D.A. RAWORTH AND M.C. ROBERTSON AGRICULTURE ANDAGRI-FOOD CANADA, P.O. BOX 1000,AGASSIZ, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA V0M 1A0 Stethorus punctillum Weise is a Palearctic species first reported in North America by Brown(1950), butfoundinthe 1940's incollections fromOntario (Putman 1955). Thebeetle was collected on Lulu Island near Vancouver BC in 1950 (Tonks 1953). Since 1997 it has been mass reared and sold (Applied Bio-nomics Ltd., Saanich, BC) as a biological control agentfortwo-spottedspidermites, Tetranychus urticaeKoch(Acari: Tetranychidae) (Raworth 2001). Accordingto Gordon(1985)S.punctumpicipes Casey, a speciesnativetoNorthAmerica, andthe introduced species S.punctillum have overlapping distributions onthe west coast of NorthAmerica. Concernaboutthe potential impact ofcommercialreleases ofS. punctillum onthe speciescomplexinthe LowerFraserValleypromptedareviewofourrecentcollections ofStethorus, and collections oftwo otherresearchers, fromthe Pacific Northwest. Stethorus spp. were collected during various studies from: raspberry, Rubus idaeus L. (Rosaceae) at Abbotsford BC (1986, 1996), Summerland BC (1997), and Snohomish and Skagit Counties WA (1991); corn, Zea Mays L. (Gramineae) at Vancouver BC (1992); and greenhouse cucumber Cucumissativus L. (Cucurbitaceae) atAbbotsford (1995) and Cobble Hill BC (1996). The beetles were maintained in 70% ethanol and the genitalia ofthe males were dissected andmounted onslides. Identifications were basedon Gordon (1985) using a phase contrastmicroscope, and confirmedbyY. Bousquet atthe EasternCereal and Oilseed ResearchCentre, Ottawa. Forty-threemalebeetles collected fromthe PacificNorthwestwere all S. punctillum. Five male beetles collected from Summerland, BC were all S. punctum picipes. Stethoruspunctillum was the only species found in collections fromagricultural habitats inthe Pacific Northwestduring a 12-yearperiod. Althoughthe sample size was not large (43 males), the samples were consistentamong years and locations, suggesting thatS.punctillum is the dominantspecies. Continued inundative andaugmentativereleases ofS.punctillum will probablynotalterthe species complex inthe LowerFraserValley. Stethoruspunctillum may have displaced S. punctumpicipes in agricultural areas ofVancouver Island and the Lower FraserValleypriorto commercialreleases. Putman(1955) described arapid displacement in southernOntariobetween 1930and 1940. Nomass rearedbeetleshave as yetbeendistributed to growers inthe OkanaganValley, although 500 have been sold to a grower further east, at Winlaw (Bob Macadam, Westgro Sales Inc., personal communication). Further work is needed to determine the nature ofthe complex inthe Okanagan. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The authors thankB. Congdon and D. Gillespie for additional samples ofStethorus, and Y. Bousquet for confirming our identifications. The work was funded in part by the BC Raspberry Growers' Association, the BC Greenhouse Vegetable Research Council and the Federal Mil and PERD programs.
