It was not until 2016 that the University of Bucharest’s DoctoralSchoolinCommunicationSciences, theninitseighthyear, welcomedits neighbouringdisciplineofinformationscience,thankstoaPhDsupervisorspecial- ising in library and information science. Information science thus finally found an appropriatehomeinRomania, atleastfordoctoralstudies. It was within the framework of this Doctoral School that the ‘New Challenges, NewApproaches’conferencewasorganisedin2018.Theconferencesuccessfully outlinedthecurrentframeworkofinformationscience, discussingtheinfluenceof newtechnologiesoninformationneeds, practicesandbehaviour, definingthecurrent roleoftheinformationscientistandintroducingthediverseresearchdirectionsbeing pursuedinthefield.Fromthebreadthoftopicsdiscussedattheconferencecamethe ideaforavolumethatcouldcapturesomeoftheresearchconcernsofinformation science scholars and mark the beginning of a new phase for the field in Romania. v vi Preface Further events associated with the Doctoral School, covering such topics as the future challenges and possibilities for libraries, gamification, games and libraries, andchangesininformationseeking, strengthenedtheconvictionthatthetimewas righttopublishacollectiononthechallengesandtrendsinthefield. Thecontributorstothisvolumeincludeinformationscienceprofessors, leading gamedevelopmentresearchers, majortheoristsofgamingandplayandexperienced practitionersinthedomainoflibraries, informationandcommunication.Although some of the authors participated in the 2018 conference, this book comprises new contributions, notpaperspresentedatthatevent.Thebookisdividedintothreeparts by general theme, but each chapter stands alone and variations in authorial style and article structure have been maintained as a strength of the collection, repre- sentingastylisticdiversitythatshouldbeencouragedalongsidenewmethodological approaches. I would like to give thanks to all of the contributors to this volume for their work, butespeciallytoDr.AriHaasioforhisenthusiasm, support, encouragement and assistance at different stages of the shaping of this book, to Professors Jan Nolin, J. Tuomas Harviainen and Markku Mattila and to Dr. Arja Mäntykangas, former senior lecturer at the University of Borås, for her valuable comments and suggestions. I would also like to thank Mr. Titi Jalba˘ from E-nformation for his supportinpublishingthisbook.
