The University of Pretoria requires that doctoral research results should be published in journals and book chapters. From my doctoral thesis several articles and one book chapter were published after submission of the thesis (during 2009–2012). With the kind (written) permission of the journals and one book publisher, some sec- tions appear in this book in a revised form: Kok, J., 2009, ‘Die Opstanding van Jesus as Kulminerende Genesingshandeling in Johannes’ [The resurrection of Jesus as culminating healing act in John], Verbum et Ecclesia 30 (1), 112–147. Kok, J., 2010, ‘As the Father has sent me, I send you: Towards a missional- incarnational ethos in John 4’ in R. Zimmermann & J.G. Van der Watt (eds.), Moral Language in the New Testament, Mohr Siebeck, Tübingen, pp. 168–193 (confer cum pp. 252fn19 in this book for Kok and Niemandt 2009). Kok, J., 2011, ‘The Birth of the Post Resurrection Missional Church in John’, Neotestamentica (43) 1, 1–15. Kok, J., 2012, ‘The Healing of the Blind Man in John’, Journal of Early Christian History, Vol 2.2012, pp. 36–62. In 2005 I began with this book, as part of the requirements for a PhD in New Testament Studies at the University of Pretoria which I completed in 2008 while I was a fulltime minister of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. Originally it was published in Afrikaans. In 2009 I was appointed as Senior Lecturer in New Testament Studies at the University of Pretoria and in 2012 promoted to Associate Professor and with that received some stu- dent assistant help for two hours per week. Over the years (2009–2013) sev- eral of my assistants1 and students translated the book into English. It took a very long time. The process speeded up when Professors Tobias Nicklas, John Kloppenborg and Paul Decock did an audit of our faculty in 2011. They urged the University to supply funds so that the book could be translated 1  At the University of Pretoria Dr. Hanré Janse Van Rensburg, Dr. Llewellyn Howes and Rev. Arend Hattingh assisted me in this project over the years (translation and proof reading).
