History and Management of the
National Poultry Improvement Plan
The National Poultry Improvement Plan became operational on July 1, 1935, and the
National Turkey Improvement Plan was activated on September 25, 1943, with the
approval of the Secretary of Agriculture. On December 3, 1971 the two Plans were
,
combined under one title, "The National Poultry Improvement Plan," with separate
provisions applicable to the different types of poultry.
The Plan is implemented by State authorities in cooperation with the U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA) in administering regulations forthe improvement of poultry,
poultry products, and hatcheries. Authority forthe administration of the Plan is now
contained in the Department of Agriculture Organic Act of 1944, as amended
(7 U.S.C. 429).
Provisions of the Plan are changed from time to time to conform with the development
of the industry and with new information as it becomes available. These changes are
based on recommendations made at the biennial national Plan conferences by official
delegates representing participating breeders, hatcheries, and flock owners from all
cooperating States. Current provisions of the Plan are contained in a publication
entitled "The National Poultry Improvement Plan and Auxiliary Provisions." This

Using This Publication
The hatcheries, dealers, and independentflocks listed in this publication are participat-
ing in the National Poultry Improvement Plan, according to reports submitted by the
Official State Agencies. This list of participants is published forthe purpose of devel-
oping greater efficiency in the operation of the Plan. Additional information regarding
participants may be obtained by communicating with the Contact Representative of the
Official State Agency of the respective State. The Contact Representative's name,
address, and telephone number are given at the beginning of each State's listings in
table 1
This publication is revised each year because of frequent changes in participation and
the need for inspectors, hatchery managers, dealers, and others to have up-to-date
information. In addition to this listing, all Official State Agencies are notified of
changes in participation that take place during the year.
The National Poultry Improvement Plan provisions, as contained in Title 9, Chapter I,
Parts 145 and 147 of the Code of Federal Regulations, provide for recognition of
different classes ortypes of fowl as follows:
Subpart B-Egg-Type Chickens,
Subpart C-Meat-Type Chickens,
Subpart D-Turkeys,
Subpart E-Waterfowl, Exhibition Poultry, and Game Birds, and
Subpart F-Ratities.
Participants handling egg-type and meat-type chickens and turkeys are listed in a
separate publication (APHIS 91-55-084) in this series.
Approval Numbers In table 1 ofthis publication, the numerals preceding the name of the State, together
with those preceding the name of each participant, constitute the participant's approval
number. For example, the approval numberforthe first hatchery listed under Alabama
is 64-800. The number 64 represents the State of Alabama; 800 represents Anderson
Creek Hatchery, 6780 Highway207, Anderson 35610. These assigned numbers may
be used by participants on shipping labels, certificates, invoices, and other documents
for identification. The numbers may also be used as reference numbers for shipments
to member States of the European Economic Community.

the first name in that category.
Hatching-Egg Capacity Figures in this column referto the hatching-egg capacity of hatcheries, according to
manufacturer's rating, including setting and hatching trays. Letter symbols in this
column referto products that dealers handle, as follows: E, hatching eggs; C, chicks;
P, poults; and SP, started pullets. When an independent flock is listed, this column is
left blank.
