The open plains of Eastern Montana provide land for grain farming, grazing for large herds ofbeef cattle, oil and gasfields, andrichcoaldepositsforminingandelectricalproduction.The mountainous regions of Western Montana yield timber for wood-products manufacturing and mineralsformining. In addition, Montana'snatural beautyattracts manytourists to the state. Primary industries often determine the direction of a state or local economy. Montana's primary industries include agriculture, manufacturing, mining, tourist-re- lated, railroad, heavy construction and federal government. Service industries have become increasingly important in Montana also, and Montana's major service industries include trade, education, health services and government. Small businesses are very important to Montana's economy. In private, non-farm wage and salary jobs, 35 percent of jobs are with firms employing fewer than 20 people—and 70 percent of workers are with businesses employing fewer than 100 people.
