The book addresses learners' practical needs by com.bining structural exercises with tasks that practise communication skills. Part A provides exercises basedonessential grarnmatical structures. Part B practises individual functions and small groups of functions such as making introductions, expressing needs, describing people, etc. Many of the exercises are based on settings explained at the beginning of this part. Part C allows you to take on realistic roles in short scenes, set in a range of different contexts. The emphasis here is on finding appropriate ways to express the various roles. Parts B and C are designed so as to make it easy to work through situations as and when you need them. The book is intended for all those who already have a basic knowledge of German and are seeking to become more independent users. This reference work will be most useful to you if you have reached level B 1 as defined by the Council of Europe (www.coe.inV T/DG4/Portfolio/?L=E&M=Imain_pages!levels.html) or Intermediate-High according to the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (www.actft.org/files/public/Guidelinesspeak.pdf). Ideally it should be used alongside Routledge's Modern German Grammar, Third Edition. The exercises in Parts A and Bare cross-referenced to the relevant sections ofthe Grammar with an arrow ~ sign. The references introducing each scene in Part C correspond to entries in the index of Modern German Grammar. These help you to find how to express yourself in a way appropriate to the particular scene. However, if you do not have a copy of the Grammar, you can complete the exercises using a good dictionary and a standard reference grarnmar. *) . More advanced exercises are marked with a star ( Part A Structures
