Now as chair of the Ontario Lung Association, I fi nd it offers even greater relevance. For the last couple of months we have been working with our community partners across the province to help parents who smoke in their family vehicle understand the health risks to their children. Quite simply, there is no safe way to smoke in the car. Because their bodies are still developing, children are especially vulnerable to the poisons of second-hand smoke. Combine this with the fact that concentrations of second-hand smoke are more intense in the enclosed space of a vehicle and the risk increases substantially. Now in Ontario, new legislation banning smoking vehicles when children under the age of 16 are passengers is effective January 21, 2009. The Ontario Lung Association applauds the Government of Ontario for taking this important step towards protecting our children. For parents, your reasons for not smoking in your car are as close as your back seat. Dean Karakasis Chair, Ontario Lung Association When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters Dean Karakasis became chair of the Ontario Lung Association September 2008. He has been a long-serving volunteer of the lung health organization, serving as a Board Director for 14 years. Dean is currently executive director of BOMA Ottawa.
