Asthecommunitymayknow,theMICconferenceistraditionallyheldinoddyears,and thismeansthatthiseditionshouldhavetakenplacein2021.However,duetotheCOVID 19pandemicsituationandgiventhatthemainfeatureofMICistoprovideafriendly environment for discussion of on new ideas, collaborations and meeting old and new friends,inaccordwiththeSteeringCommitteewedecidedtopostponetheconference to2022withthehope–andthebet–thatitcouldbeheldmostlyinperson.Wewonour bet,andwewerereallypleasedtowelcomealargenumberofenthusiasticparticipants! MIC2022continues,then,itsmissioninplayingauniqueroleasaninformation-and knowledge-sharing forum in the metaheuristics area, enabling attendees to learn and networkacrossthebroadrangeofitsofferings. MIC2022washeldfromJuly11–14,2022inbeautifulOrtigia,thehistoricalisland ofthecityofSyracuse,Sicily,Italy.Byhostingtheevent,thecityofSyracusegavethe participantstheopportunitytoenjoytherichesofitshistoricalandculturalatmosphere, its traditions, and the beauties of its natural resources, such as the sea, the Roman Amphitheatre,theGreekTheatre,andtheEarofDionysius,whichisalimestonecave in the shape of a human ear. Syracuse is also the city where the great mathematician Archimedeswasborn. Inthisedition,wewantedtogivegreaterprominencetoissuesconcerningtheinte- grationbetweenmetaheuristicsandmachinelearning,proposingreputablePlenarytalks byleadingscientistswhoprovidedabroadviewonthestateoftheartandonthefuture ofthisgrowingandemergingtopic.Keynotespeakershavealwaysbeenoneofthemost importantpartsofMIC,andoursixspeakersthisyearwerethefollowing: – ChristianBlum,SpanishNationalResearchCouncil,Spain – KalyanmoyDeb,MichiganStateUniversity,USA – FredGlover,Entanglement,Inc.,USA – SalvatoreGreco,UniversityofCatania,Italy – HolgerH.Hoos,LeidenUniversity,TheNetherlands – GaryKochenberger,Entanglement,Inc.,USA – El-GhazaliTalbi,UniversityofLille1,CNRS,INRIA,France Around125ofvalidsubmissionswerereceivedofwhich72paperswereselected. Among those overall accepted submissions, 34 were of regular papers, 23 of short papers and 15 consisted of oral presentations of recently published works. The best 48 manuscripts, among short and regular papers, were included in this Volume. Each paperwasreviewedbyateamof102PCmembersandreviewersthatwedeeplythankfor theircontributiontoMIC2022’ssuccess.Asorganizers,weareveryhappyandproud to have had 150 participants overall of whom more than 110 were present. In total, vi Preface MIC 2022 offered to the participants 8 parallel sessions of oral presentations, whose topicsrangedfromthefoundationofmetaheuristictechniquestotheirapplicationinthe solutionofcombinatorialproblemsarisinginmanyreal-worlddomains.Anumberof satellitesocialeventsalsotookplace,withthepurposeofgivingtheconferencedelegates theopportunitytofinallyinteractinpersonafterthislongpandemictime. Finally,wewouldliketothankandrecognizetheenormouseffortsofallmembersof theorganizingcommittee,includedthelocalmembers,whomadeMIC2022possibleby donatingtheirtime,expertise,andenthusiasm.Withouttheirhardworkanddedication, asuccessfuleventlikeMIC2022wouldnothavebeenpossible.Ofcourse,wewould not have been able to organize an event on such a high scientific level without the excellent work done by all program committee members, the financial manager and conferencesecretariat,aswellasthedistinguishedplenaryspeakers,towhomweexpress andconfirmourgreatappreciation.Themainthanksareaddressedtoallauthorswho supported MIC 2022 by sending their important and excellent contributions.
