Gray recounts her hardships because of her family’s lower class status. “Leaving my country because of war and exiling to Ghana in the refugee camp with my family was very difficult,” she said. “Living in a community where you had to pay for everything in order to survive was frustrating. We had to walk long distances to have water to drink, to take showers, wash clothes or do other things that many would consider basic conveniences of daily life. For us they were big struggles.” Before leaving Liberia, two of Pittman’s uncles were killed in the war. She also lost an aunt to disease due to the lack of access to medical care. “I didn’t just lose my uncles and aunty to the war; I also lost my childhood and my education,” she said. “During the 1996 civil war, I saw people getting killed, women getting raped in front of their children and husbands, and people dying of hunger.” Pittman recalls school teachers sending her home because her family was unable to pay school fees. “I had to sell doughnuts for days or sometimes weeks before paying my school fees,” she said. “I u d never had the right uniform or shoes for school. Many days I didn’t d.e have note books, pencils or a book bag because my parents could fiel ns not afford it. Often I only ate once a day and the amount was very ma little.
