Virginia Mason, or Oma as we called her, was a woman of many accomplishments, from delivering babies in the Appalachian Mountains, to playing basketball on one of the first University of Louisville women’s teams, to serving as an army nurse in World War II. She lived quietly and privately, but through her stories and service to her church she touched many lives. Aunt Val was in many ways similar to Oma. She did many different things to support her family, even owning her own franchise at one point and working with the Sheriff’s department. After my mother died, she invited us to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with them, and every year she made my kids her grandkids and gave us all a place to call home. When these wonderful women died, the outpouring of love at their funerals amazed me, and I could only think how both were true demonstrations of the power of servant leadership. I miss them every day.
