It's named after the Crow Indians' red lodges ofteepees. Red Lodge is located in the Beartooth/Absaroka Mountain Range and considered by many to be the most beautiftil gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Sports enthusiasts enjoy golfing and skiing. According to the Montana Almanac, by authors Andrea Merrill and Judy Jacobson, the county was established in 1895 and named "Carbon" because ofthe coal deposits and coal mining. The county is home to Granite Peak, the highest elevation in the state. According to the U.S. Bureau ofthe Census, median income for Carbon County households in 1989 was $19,042. The county is 2,062.3 square miles in area; 2,048.1 square miles in land area and 14.2 in inland water area. County residents experience the four distinct seasons. According to the Montana Almanac, the average daily low in Red Lodge in January between 1980 and 1989 was 1 1.2 degrees above zero and average January snowfall 21.4 inches. The average daily high in July was 79.3 degrees above. The Montana Almanac shows the annual average precipitation in Joliet in 1994 was 14.80 inches and the length ofgrowing season 158 days.
