FOREWORD 0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by·the Indian Standards Institution on 20 August 1968, after the draft finalized by the Docu mentationSectional Committee had been approved by the Executive Committee. 0.1 An article is one among the important media for the communi cation of information. Anotherwise good article may be delayed in reaching ormay even fail to reach its potential readers for want of helpful presentation Ofideasin it. 0.3 A helpfularrangementoftheideas isa meansfor better dissemina tion ofthe information contained in anarticle.This standardis a guide for the preparation of the article in sucha way as to facilitate easy comprehension and assimilationofthecontents ofthe article. 1. SCOPE 1.1 Thisstandardlays downgeneral instructionsfor the guidanceofan author for the preparation ofthe text ofan article communicatingthe results ofresearch to a learned periodical. 1. TERMINOLOGY 1.0 Forthepurposeofthisstandard,thefollowingdeGnitionshallapply. 1.1 Leametl Perl~ical- A periodical containing research communi cations. 3. GENERAL CHARACl'ERlSTICS OF THE CONTENT OF AN ARTICLE 3.1 An articlemay present new facts, ideas, concepts, theories, tech niquesand data. 3.1 Alternatively, otinaddition, an article may givea new interpreta tion ofknownfacts, concepts, theories, ideas and data. 3 IS :4731- 1968 3.3 An ar.ticle may present the subject in a new perspective and establish correlations between subjects or topics. 3.4 Alternatively, or in addition, an article may give a historical treatment ofthe subject. 3.5 An article may pertain to the testing or evaluation of any existing theory, concept, or technique. 4. PRESENTATION 4.1 SequenceofPresentatioD- A logical sequence should be followed for the arrangement of ideas, facts, observations, data, etc, among the various sections andsubsections ofthe article. 4.1 Clarity of PresentatioD- An idea should be expressed without ambiguityso that the reader is able to grasp it easily. 4.3 Synonyms and homonyms should be avoided asfar as possible. Example: The use oftheterms•Periodical" •Journal', (Magazine' and (Serial•indifferent parts ofthetextto indicatethe •Periodical•• 4.4 TechnicalTerminology- Standardtechnicalterms shouldbeused, 4.4.1 Newly coinedterms may be listed with their definitions at an appropriate place in thetext. 5. STRUCTURE 5.1 An article comprisesa number ofdistinctstructuralelements.Each elementshould be givena conciseheading bringingoutthe contentof the clement concerned. The beadings for the structuralelements in different types ofarticles maydiffer. depending upon the natureof the studyreported. 5.1.1 An article reporting the results ofan experimental or theoreti cal study may have.all orsome ofthe following elements, a) Title witha subtitlein the caseofan article forming a partofa scr;.:.; b) Name(s) and addressees) ofauthor(s); c) Date ofreceiptofmanuscript; d) Abstract; e) Introduction; f) Body ofthe article: 1) Experimental procedure. 2) Results, and 3) Discussion; 4 IS:4;31 , 1968 g) Conclusion; h) Summary; j) Definitions, notations and symbols; k) Acknowledgement; m) Appendices; n) Bibliographicalreference; p) Tables; and q) Illustrations. 5.U Numbering System- The use of the well-defined numbering system·todesignate the structural elements ofa text to help the author in presentingthematerial withclarity and the reader.tofollow the text is being increasingly realized. For instance the.structural elements may be numbered1,2,3,etc,andsubdividedas 1.1.1.2,2.1,2.2, 3.1.·3.2, etc. Further subdivisionmay be made as 1.1.1, 1.1.2, etc. However. it is desirable to avoid subdivision in anyone number designation exceedingthreesubdivisions, forexample. 1.1.1.1. 5.1.3 Each headingofa structural element should contain a noun, Theuse ofany otherpartofspeech.suchas the adjective •Experimen tal•by itselfas a headingis undesirable. 5.2 Title-Thetitle ofthe art.icle should bebrief,predseand informa tive. andshouldcontainkey words indicative of thescope of thestudy. Thisfacilitates indexing, besides helping the reader to havean idea of the contentofthe articleat a glance. 5.2.1 If the title is long, a shorter •Running .title' may also be provided. 5.2.2 Ifthe articleisa part ofa series, a subtitle indicative of the work covered in"the .article shall be given. Itisnotenough to add PartII, PartIII, etc, to the title. 5.3 AIltIlon' N..etI aft AcldraHs- In the case ofan article with multiple,uthonhip.any convenientorder of giving theauthor'. name may be chosen, but it is preferable to give the principal or senior author·s name first. 5.3.1 If the article is the resulrof collaborative work of authon workingindifFerent institutions, it ispreferableto givetheir respective namesand addressesseparately. Saxena Central Indian Medicinal Plants Organization, Lucknow.. 5.4 Abstract- The abstract 'should be prepared in accordance with theprovision of IS:795-1956*. Itshouldnotordinarily exceed 3-percent of the length of the paper or 200 words. The abstract should be informative and should outline as briefly as possible the scope ofthe work, the principal findings and the definitive conclusions ofthework. Itshould be prepared in such a form that abstracting periodicals may use it without modification. NOT. - Theiterns.ofinformationgivenin5.2 to SA are called preliminary atatements. Theprelinlinarystatementsmaycontainadditional items ofinfor mation, such as date of receipt of the article which establishes priority of publicationandkeywordstakenfromanassignedthesarus. An •IndianStandard recommendationfor preliminarystatementsin anarticleinalearned periodical' ie underpreparation. 5.5 Introduction- The introductionshouldgive briefly the lacunz in what is knownin the subject and thegaps the paperattemptsto fill up. Thebackgroundand purpose ofthe investigation should be indicated. A brief statement ofrelevant previous work with references may be given;descriptionsofearlierfindingsor citationsfrom earlier publica tionsshould be avoided. Itis becominga common practice to give in the concluding part of the Introduction, an idea. of the important findings ofthestudy reported. This facilitates the readers'understand ingof the valueofthe work reported. 5.6 Bodyofthe Article 5.6.1 The body of the article maycomprise a numberof suitably .: titledstructural elements. 5.6.2 Wherea well-known procedure ortreatmentis used, it should not be described in detail; modifications, if any, in the procedures followed maybe indicated. It is enough to ~ive relevant literature references. Onlyin such cases wherea new procedure or treatment is followed it should be described in detail. 5.6.3 The same results should not be presented in bothtablesand graphs. 5.6.4 In mathematical papers,equations and mathematical-expres sions should be neatly and clearly written.in hand. ·Canonsfor makingabstricta. 6
