PresslyandOscarJohnSnydertargeted Philadelphiaasafuturehomeforanosteopathicmedicalcollege.Althoughthecityof brotherlylovehadarichhistoryofmedicine,ithadbutone"osteopathist"bythetime PresslyandSnydergraduatedin 1898and 1899,respectively.Thetwopioneering osteopathicphysiciansfollowedthroughwiththeirvision,incorporatingthePhiladelphia CollegeandInfirmaryofOsteopathyonJanuary24, 1899.ThefirstPCIOdegreewas awardedtoatransferstudent;thefirstPCIOclass,comprisedoftwostudents,graduated inFebruary1900fromthefledglingcollege,thenlocatedat21 South 12thStreet. Thecollegeprosperedandmovedthroughanumberofsitesinitsfirstcentury, including 1715NorthBroadStreet, 832PineStreet, 19thandSpringGarden,48thandSpruce,and finally,theCityAvenueCampus.Duringthisgrowthperiod,themedicalcurriculum intensified,osteopathicresearchwasinitiated,andclinicandhospitalservicesgrewrapidly asthemedicalschool'sstudentbodyandfacultyexpandeddramatically. Afternearlyacenturyoftrainingphysicians,PCOMopeneditsfirstgraduatedegree program, theMasterofScienceinBiomedicalSciences,in 1993.Thefirstfivegraduates inJune 1995markedthebeginningofyetanotherperiodofgrowthforthecollege- thedevelopmentofagraduateschool.Tenyearslater,nearly500graduatestudentsare enrolledinPCOM'smastersanddoctoraldegreeprograms. PCOM'sgraduatestudentspursuestudiesatthemasterslevelinbiomedicalscience, counselingandclinicalhealthpsychology,organizationaldevelopmentandleadership, forensicmedicineandphysicianassistantstudies. Doctoral-levelstudyisofferedin clinicalpsychologyandschoolpsychologywithcertificateprogramsforprofessionals seekingrespecializationinclinicalpsychology.Throughinnovativedistancelearning methodsandmoderntelecommunicationstechnology, PCOMextendsitsPsy.D. programtooff-campusclassesatEastStroudsburgUniversityandtheDixon University CenterinHarrisburg. Dr.Moritsuguhasbeenrepresentativetonumerousnationalhealthcareagencies andhasprovidedexpertisetovariousinternationalorganizationsandgovernments. Ofparticularnote,heservedastheofficialU.S.observertotheCouncilof Europe'sSelectCommitteeofExpertsontheImpactoftheAIDSEpidemiconthe CriminalJusticeSysteminStrasbourg,France,andastherepresentativeto the75'*"AnniversaryofthePanAmericanHealthBoardinHavana,Cuba. Since1994,Dr.Moritsuguhasadvocatedfororganandtissuedonationandtrans- plantation,participatingintheNationalDonorFamilyRecognitionProgramsin Washington,D.C.Inhisprivatecapacity,hehasbeenamemberoftheboardof directorsoftheWashingtonRegionalTransplantConsortium,theNational AdvisoryBoardfortheMinorityOrganandTissueTransplantEducationforOrgan Sharing,theboardoftrusteesoftheNationalKidneyFoundation,aswellasan activevolunteerwiththeTransplantRecipientsInternationalOrganization. Anotededucator, Dr. Moritsuguisanadjunctprofessorofpublichealthatthe GeorgeWashingtonUniversitySchooloftheHealthSciencesandanadjunct associateprofessorofpreventativemedicineattheUniformedServicesUniversity oftheHealthSciences. Hehasspokenandwrittenextensivelyinmanydiverse areas,includinghealthprofessionseducation,credentialingandqualityassess- ment,internationalhealth,healthsystemsdevelopment,healthcaredeliveryto underservedpopulations,emergencyresponse,correctionalhealthcare,managed care,HIV,healthpromotion/diseaseprevention,organandtissuedonationand transplantation,andmostrecently,bioterrorism. Dr.Moritsuguisboardcertifiedinpreventativemedicineandisacertifiedcorrectional healthprofessional.HealsoholdsfellowshipsintheAmericanCollegeofPreventative Medicine,theRoyalSocietyofHealth,andtheRoyalSocietyofMedicine. Dr.MoritsuguwasbornandraisedinHonolulu, Hawaii. Hereceiveda BaccalaureateDegreewithHonorsinClassicalLanguagesfromtheUniversityof Hawaiiin 1967,anM.D. fromtheGeorgeWashingtonUniversitySchoolof Medicinein 1971,andanM.P.H. inHealthAdministrationandPlanningfrom theUniversityofCalifornia, Berkeley, in 1975.
