In these pages, I am delighted to be able to share with you even more about this wonderful third person of the Trinity and to encourage you to know and experience a relationship with Him in new and glorious ways. Join me as we discover how to experience a deeper, more intimate relationship with the blessed Holy Spirit. 5 Before We Begin In the following pages, I will refer you to a number of Bible verses and Scripture passages. In some cases, you will see words that are italicized. Italics indicate that these words have been supplied or included by the translators of the King James Version. In many places, you will see words or phrases printed in boldface type. Within Bible quotations, I have used that bold type in order to emphasize a specific name or function of the Holy Spirit to help you better understand the principles we are discussing. Be blessed as you see Him revealed in God's Word! 7 PART I The Person of the Holy Spirit I A s we read the Bible, we see many names that refer to God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This variety of titles is not meant to cause confusion, but to accomplish just the opposite. They are intended to help us understand and experience the countless wonderful aspects of the triune God. They help reveal His character and His nature—as brilliant, as rich, and as multifaceted as a precious jewel. God, the great "I AM" (Exodus 3:14), is referred to by many different names throughout the Bible, each with a specific meaning and application. For example, they range from "Almighty God" (Genesis 17:1) to "the most High" (Psalm 91:9) to "The Lord of hosts" and "the Holy One of Israel" (Isaiah 54:5) to YAH or YAHWEH (Psalm 68:4). The name of the Lord Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua, which means "YAHWEH saves". And this is exactly what YAHWEH, the Lord God, did for us through the shed blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. Throughout the pages of Scripture, we also see many other titles and names used for the Lord Jesus—from "the Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6) to "the bread of life" (John 6:48) to "the light of the world" (John 8:12) to "the good shepherd" (John 10:11). Likewise, the Holy Spirit has a variety of names throughout Scripture. Rightly understood, these names help us know who He really is and what He can do in 9 Going Deeper with the Holy Spirit our lives. They provide tremendous insight into the will, ways, and work of the Holy Spirit. I'd like to show you what these names mean to you and how you can experience the Holy Spirit more intimately as you come to understand Him through His names. The Holy Spirit Perhaps the most common name you will hear for the Holy Spirit is exactly that—the Holy Spirit. That is not only His predominant title, but also a power- packed definition of who and what He is. He is Holy— not defiled or common, but possessing all the purity and holiness of God. He is also Spirit—not flesh, as humans are; nor having a physical body, but sharing the very invisible nature and essence of God. Because of the incredible glory that envelopes me and floods my being when I am in the presence of the Holy Spirit, I find it difficult to put into words just how I feel when I am in His presence. Words seem inadequate and cheap when attempting to describe an experience of such incredible spiritual wealth. The dimension of His power and presence is beyond anything else I have ever experienced. The Holy Spirit can take an ordinary hotel room and transform it into a sacred cathedral by His very presence. He can take a massive arena or stadium designed for sporting events and transform it into the Holy of Holies—the place where God's presence resides and is manifest. And in the vast expanse of that arena, any individual who has been touched by the presence of the Holy Spirit can experience such dynamic fellowship and intimacy in that presence that all awareness of others fades in the light of His glory. 10
