Eric P. Newman 6450 Cecil Avenue St. Louis, Missouri 63105 Hello Eric, 1-7-03 It has been some time since I have written you. I hope your family had a nice holiday season and that everyone is well. What is new? How do you like Louis Jordans’ book? Did you see the images of the N.E. 3d that I finally got printed in the C-4 newsletter this past fall? I worked on getting into the Mass. Historical Society for quite some time to view that piece. It was awesome! You and I had talked about it last year in Boston. Eric, in Noe it mentions that your number 12 pine tree 12d may have been different than the one in Crosby. I assume that it was in fact the same piece from Castine? What are your feelings on the 12? I have also wanted to ask you what you have in regards to N.E. or willow tree types. Specific varieties or rarities? I can only assume you must have some great specimens. My hope is that some day there will be a working census of at least the rarity 6+ Mass, silver. I have discussed this recently with Henry Dittmer. Alan Weinberg and Mike Hodder have also been interested as well as others. We want to form a group called the N.E. shilling society. Would you like to be an honarar^y member? I hope you can write me back soon. Page 1 of 1 Subj: Your 1-7-03 letter Date: 1/11/2003 1:37:43 PM Central Standard Time From: To: Dear Geoffrey: Thank you for your good wishes. I have read Lou Jordan's book and am in steady correspondence with him. Few can imagine the amount of work that he did. As to your images of the Mass.Hist, Soc. NE 3d I certainly did see them. Now perhaps you will locate the Yale piece. Did you compare the Mass Hist. Soc. piece with the image of the Yale piece to see if they could possibly be the same coin. Please let me know about this. I do not know what you want me to say about the Noe 12 shilling. I am satisfied it is the Castine piece and that It is the same coin Noe illustrated. Several have tried to sabotage it including Breen but he was doing that under pressure. It is nice for you to ask me to be an honorary member of a society which has not been formed yet, but as you know action speaks louder. Incidentally who is the New England collector who wants publicity about how complete his Mass silver collection is but does not to want to disclose who he is? Have a wonderful year and good luck. I will let you know if I find out anymore about N.E. pieces. The N.E. collector is Henry Dittmer. Coin World just did that story on him. Geoff, Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. It has been some time since I have written to you. I certainly hope that all is well with your family. Your endowment towards the University museum was very impressive. I read the article in CoinWorld with interest. I will be sure to someday visit there in St. Louis. I speak frequently with Mr. Henry Dittmer on the telephone. He and I have added many more members to the New England Shilling Society. We share a passion for Mass, silver coinage. I recently acquired a few cut pieces from the Feversham. This is awesome stuff! You never sent me any info, on your pending research into the spelling of Masathvsets. This was a topic which intrigued me also. The word is obviously an attempt to “Latinize” this Native American term. English coinage of the period used Latin. Why was the obverse however, partly left alone? New England instead of Nova Anglo, (Anglorum), etc..., to go along with An Dom? My Latin is awful. I acquired a Noe 22 small planchet 12d awhile back which does not have the GL recut and connected, as is part of the designated die state. Have you seen this? If you can find the time I would really like to hear from you Eric. Sincerely yours as always. NEW ENGLAND SHILLING SOClETv & PILGRIM CLUG NOE140AK® YAhOO.o. ERIC P. NEWMAN NUMISMATIC EDUCATION SOCIETY . 6450Cecil AvenueSt. Louis, Missouri 63105 January 21, 2004 Geoffrey P. Stevens Dear Mr. Stevens: Thank you for your comments about our new museum activity. Numismatics has made my life so full; I am glad to continue to share my enjoyments. My work on the spelling of MASATHVSETS has been sidetracked due to other research. You mentioned the use of English and Latin on the coins, and you can add that the Algonquin language was not written but phonetically The Latin could have been eliminated entirely as the words AN DOM were unnecessary, but maybe religious thinking encouraged that insertion. If the die state of your Pine Tree Noe 22 has not been previously identified or published, why don't you write it up? Keep rolling, Eric P. Newman mb
