Washington ‘gridlock’ has
helped lower deficit
Gridlock isn’t all bad, at least when it comes to
the federal deficit.
The Wall Street Journal reports the federal defi-
cit in 2014 fell to a seven-year low of $488 billion,
or $72 billion less than in 2013. If measured by the
federal government’s fiscal year calendar, which
ended in September, the deficit was $483 billion.
Both numbers are the lowest of Barack Obama’s
presidency.
The deficit is still a big number, especially when
compared to the latter days of the Clinton adminis-
tration, when the nation ran a surplus. But compared
to the trillion-dollar deficits run in the name of “eco-
nomic stimulus” during the Great Recession, $488
billion represents progress.
In relative terms, the 2014 deficit is less than
three percent of gross domestic product, lower than
the average for the 1980s and far better than the 10
percent of GDP that was registered in 2009 amid the
president’s stimulus programs.
An improving economy and accompanying
growth in tax receipts gets some of the credit for
the declining deficit. But another significant factor
is the once-notorious sequester, a series of automatic
spending caps and cuts that grew out of the inability
of a politically divided Congress to agree on a bud-
get any other way.
As it turns out, that financial discipline proved far
less draconian than it was made out to be by many
politicians, and some degree of fiscal responsibility
ended up being restored.
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office
forecasts that the deficit will again decline in 2015,
but then will start to spike due to increased govern-
ment spending on Social Security and Medicare.

Jesse Daniel Riddle was named to the Dean’s

Jesse maintained a 3.5 GPA and is a member of

Jesse is a 2013 graduate of Gallatin County High
School and is the son of Stephen and Tina Riddle of
Warsaw.
