He obtained his MD from the University of Buenos Aires, ArgentinaandhisPhD(inneuroendocrine regulation) fromMIT,Cambridge,MA,USA.He startedhisfacultycareeratHarvardMedicalSchool,andmovedtoJohnsHopkinsin1990to foundtheCenterforHumanNutrition. Dr.Caballeroisarecognizedexpertonthenutritionalneedsofchildrenandadults,andon nutrientrequirementsinundernourishedpopulations.Forthepast10years,hehasfocusedon the problem of childhood obesity in the US and in developing countries, and explored the impactofdietarytransitionandglobalizationonhealthindicators.Heisanactiveparticipant in key scientific committees advising the US government on issues of diet and health, includingtheDietaryReferenceIntakes(DRI)Committee;theExpertPanelonMacronutrient Requirements; and the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, National AcademyofSciences.HewasamemberoftheDietaryGuidelinesforAmericansAdvisoryCommittee,andiscurrentlyamember oftheScientificAdvisoryBoardoftheFoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)andoftheInternationalLifeSciencesInstitute(ILSI). Dr.Caballeroisanactiveleaderintheareaofglobalhealth,specificallyondiet,lifestyle,anddiseaserisk.HeisChairmanof the Board of the Pan American Health and Education Foundation, in Washington, DC, USA and member of the Board of Directors of the International Nutrition Foundation, Boston, MA, USA. Recent awards include the Ancel Keys Prize for achievementsininternationalpublichealthandtheThompson–BeaudetteLectureshipfromRutgersUniversity.In2011,hewas namedtotheSpanishAcademyofNutritionalSciences.
