Acknowledgements I begin by thanking Eileen and Hugh for being the inspiration for this project and for all the patients and staff at the hospice where I work for their kind advice, enthusiasm and support. During the first two years of this project Professor Alan Radley’s clear vision on ‘worlds’ and ‘works’ of illness provided a foundation for my ideas for this project, combined with the creative knowledge and enthusiasm from Alastair Adams.
