The reading material has been closely scrutinised and three completely new sections, offering more modern inci dents, have replaced a fairy tale and two passages dealing with Robinson Crusoe ; textual changes have been made else where in the interests of clarity and simplicity. As before, the outline of grammatical structure is closely related to the text and remains the bedrock on which this course is based. In response to many requests, the number of exercises has been increased to give variety and a wide range of written tasks, graded to the needs of differing abilities. This seemed to me an essential ingredient now that French is being taught in ever-increasing numbers in all forms of secondary schools, with the possibility that primary schools may follow suit. Every effort has been made throughout to maintain a thread of revision. It cannot be emphasised too strongly that for any pupil the most profitable written exercise in a foreign language is composition. When revising the First Part, I took care to encourage the beginner to write simple sentences of his own design whose vocabulary he had already explored, and in this early stage there was no insistence on a particular sequence. In this Second Part, he is confronted with writing what native French teachers regard as an essential preliminary to the more closely integrated exercise of Rédaction, le Para graphe. It is this progress from the composition of sentences to the more connected simple paragraph that I have been at some pains to facilitate. v vi French Course — Part II For the more able students provision has also been made for the narration of incidents supplied by pictures. Dictation too, an invaluable exercise, whether viewed as a preliminary to composition work or as a check upon grammatical and phonetic accuracy, has been included in every section. Sound drill, previously limited to isolated vowels and consonants, has been upgraded to include practice in the breath group and intonation. . My warm thanks are due to the French and British revisers of my manuscript, to many teachers and friends for much valuable suggestion and to my publishers, Messrs. Macmillan and Co., Ltd., for all they have done to make both Point de Départ and En Avant such attractive examples of book production.
