Is it their strong family ties which are almost human-like, or the immense love, care and support for the young ones within the herd, or is the mourning for the dead or perhaps all of these and so much more that makes this animal so widely revered? ALL IN THE FAMILy elephants live in large groups or herds that normally consist of females, babies and young males. The group is always headed by a female who is also the matriarch. The sick and the wounded herd members are always helped by other elephants, using their trunk and shoulders. sometimes the healthy members within the herd even bring in food for those who cannot move. elephants are also known to linger by the dead members of their family and may cover them with branches and mud – almost like a burial ritual. All you need is some colourful chart paper, newspaper, colours, brush and a string ! Follow these steps and you’ll have an elephant mask ready Draw and cut a large round outline on a thick chart paper. Make sure this is larger than your face. Cut out tiny elephant eyes on this towards the middle and two tiny holes for the string to pass through. Similarly cut a large outline of the ears – these should be large, remember an elephant has large flapping ears. Now colour the face and the ears and paste the ears to the two sides of the elephant face. To make the trunk, take a large newspaper, colour it blackish grey, and fold it lengthwise along the centre so that the coloured part faces outward. Ensure that one end of the trunk is broader than the other and that the tip of the trunk is narrower. Now pleat the trunk just like a fan. You could start at either end and leave the pleats loose. Separate the two edges as shown in the diagram so that the pleats form a V shape. Now press the pleats together at the V and invert the pleated V. Press the broader end of the V to the round face that had been cut and kept aside. Put a string through the tiny holes and tie it at the back of your head. Your mask is ready.
