BATA LIBRARY TRENT UNIVERSITY THE AUTHOR Born and educated in the United States, Sir Moses Finley came to England in 1954 after a distinguished and varied academic career, which began when he received his BA magna cum laude from Syracuse University in 1927 at the age of fifteen. Since 1955 he has been at the University of Cambridge, where he is now Professor Emeritus of Ancient History. He was a lecturer in Classics from 1955-64, Reader in Ancient Social and Econ¬ omic History from 1964-70, and Professor of Ancient History from 1970-79. A Fellow of Jesus College for almost twenty years, he served as Master of Darwin College from 1976-84. He was knighted in 1979. — Already in 1954 he was ‘the best living social" historian of Greece’ (Arnaldo Momigliano). Since then his reputation and influence have spread worldwide through his inspirational teaching and lecturing, and his incisive editing, reviewing and writing. The World of Odysseus (1954) and The Ancient Greeks (1963) were two of his earliest, and still best-known, books; more recently, a collection of his essays conveying many of his central ideas and conclusions was published under the title Economy and Society in Ancient Greece (1981). The Ancient Economy, first published in 1972, is also avail¬ able as a Hogarth Press paperback, in a revised and enlarged edition (1985).
