VOORWOORD

De voor U liggende bibliografie is het resultaat van de voorbereidende fase van drie
verschillende onderzoeksprojekten. Huug van Ooijen startte in 1989 zijn projekt islam, etniciteit
en belangenbehartiging onder Marokkanen in Nederland. Thijl Sunier begon in 1989 zijn
onderzoek naar islam en etniciteit onder Turken in Nederland. Deze beide projekten worden
uitgevoerd bij de Vakgroep CA/SNWS van de Fakulteit der Sociaal-Culturele Wetenschappen
van de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam. In 1989 werd aan het Instituut voor Rechtssociologie
van de Fakulteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Katholieke Universiteit van Nijmegen een begin
gemaakt met een onderzoek naar de reacties van de Nederlandse samenleving op de
institutionalisering van de islam, een empirische case-study van Nederland en een vergelijking
met de situatie in België, de bondsrepubliek Duitsland, Frankrijk en Groot-Britannië. Aan dit
laatste projekt werken mee Kees Groenendijk, Jan Rath (beide van het Instituut voor Rechtsso-
ciologie) en Rinus Penninx (Vakgroep Methoden en Technieken van de Fakulteit der Sociaal-
Culturele Wetenschappen van de Vrije Universiteit).
Deze bibliografie brengt de interessegebieden van deze onderzoeksprojekten samen.
Enerzijds zijn titels samengebracht die betrekking hebben op de ontwikkeling en institutio-
nalisering van de islam binnen verschillende immigrantengemeenschappen, met name die van
Turken en Marokkanen. Anderzijds zijn ook publikaties opgenomen die betrekking hebben op
de reactie van de ontvangende samenleving op de komst van moslims en de islam als nieuwe
godsdienst in Nederland c.q. West-Europa.
We hebben deze bibliografie met name samengesteld om toekomstige onderzoekers een
handzaam overzicht te bieden van wat er op dit betrekkelijk nieuwe, en bibliografisch slecht
verkende terrein reeds voorhanden is. Niet alleen wetenschappelijke publikaties zijn
opgenomen: ook informatieve artikelen in weekbladen en tijdschriften zijn vermeld als ze meer
te bieden hadden dan de rapportage van enkele nieuwsfeiten.
Wat betreft de ruimtelijk-geografische afbakening staat de islam in Nederland weliswaar
centraal, maar waar mogelijk zijn ook titels over vergelijkbare ontwikkelingen en situaties in
andere Westeuropese landen opgenomen. Inhoudelijk is het terrein dat we met deze bibliografie
willen bestrijken ruim gedefinieerd: de samenleving is recentelijk in veel aspecten en sferen met

de islam in aanraking gekomen. Gesystematiseerde ervaringen en beleidsinitiatieven op al deze
punten zijn in de bibliografie opgenomen. Op een enkel punt zijn we wel selectief geweest: van
de talloze voorlichtingspublikaties over (leerstellige) aspecten van de islam in het algemeen (dus
los van de Nederlandse of Westeuropese context) hebben we slechts de belangrijkste
opgenomen.
Wat betreft Nederlandse sociaal-wetenschappelijke publikaties over de islam hopen wij
in deze bibliografie alle relevante publikaties opgenomen te hebben. Voor de overige,
informatieve en journalistieke publikaties kunnen wij deze pretentie van volledigheid echter niet
waarmaken. Daarom houden wij ons aanbevolen voor kommentaren, verbeteringen en
aanvullingen. Dat kan ons wellicht in staat stellen over enkele jaren een herziene en vollediger
bibliografie uit te brengen.

VOORWOORD BIJ TWEEDE EDITIE

De belangstelling voor de bibliografie was buitengewoon groot en de oplage in een mum van
tijd 'uitverkocht'. Een tweede editie leek ons daarom alleszins gerechtvaardigd. In deze nieuwe
editie hebben we de bibliografie op verschillende plaatsen gecorrigeerd. Bovendien bevat ze -
mede dankzij de reacties op van lezers - pakweg 300 nieuwe titels. Het spreekt voor zichzelf
dat wij ons aanbevolen blijven houden voor alle opmerkingen en suggesties.

PREFACE

This bibliography is the result of the preparatory phase of three different research projects. In
1989 Huug van Ooijen began his project Islam, Ethnicity and Interest-Promotion among
Moroccans in the Netherlands, and in the same year Thijl Sunier began his research into Islam
and Ethnicity among Turks in the Netherlands. Both projects were carried out in the Department
of Cultural Anthropology in the Faculty of Socio-Cultural Sciences at the Free University of
Amsterdam.
Also in 1989, at the Institute for Sociology of Law in the Law Faculty at the Catholic
University of Nijmegen, research commenced into The reactions of Dutch Society to the
Institutionalization of Islam, an empirical case-study of the Netherlands, comparing it to the
situation in Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France amd Great Britain. This project
was carried out by Kees Groenendijk, Jan Rath (both from the Institute for Sociology of Law)
and Rinus Penninx (Department of Social Research Methodology in the Faculty of Socio-
Cultural Sciences at the Free University of Amsterdam).
This bibliography brings together the fields of interest of these research projects. On the
one hand, titles are collected which deal with the development and institutionalization of Islam
within certain immigrant communities, in particular those of the Turks and Moroccans. On the
other hand, publications are included which deal with the host society's reaction to the arrival of
Muslims and to Islam as a new religion in the Netherlands or Western Europe.
We have compiled this bibliography with a view to providing future researchers with a
manageable overview of what is available in this relatively new field, which has not yet been
bibliographically explored. Not only academic publications are included: informative magazine
articles have also been listed, when they offer more than mere news-coverage.
As to the geographical focus of the bibliography, Islam in the Netherlands is the main
concern, although wherever possible titles on comparable developments and situations in other
Western European countries are given.
As to content, the area we aim to cover in this bibliography is broadly defined: society's
recent encounter with Islam has taken place in numerous aspects and spheres. Systematic
accocunts and policy initiatives on the whole range are included in the bibliography. There is

one area in which we have been selective: of the countless informative publlications on aspects
of Islam and Islamic doctrine in general (therefore outside the Dutch or Western European
context), we have included only the most important examples.
It has been our intention to includede all the relevant Dutch social science publications.
However, we cannot claim to have been so comprehansive for other more informative of
journalistic publications. We therefore welcome any comments, improvements and additions.
These will perhaps enable us, in a few years' time, to produce a revised and more complete
bibliography.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION

Interest in the bibliography proved so great that the first edition very quickly 'sold out', which in
our view justified a second run. In this new edition, we have made several corrections, and have
added some 300 new titles, in part as a result of readers' reactions. Naturally, we remain open to
all comments and suggestions.
