We are not talking anymore oonly aboutt the lack oof disease,, but we arre talking also about thee life quaality, the cultural cchanges wwhich infflluence thee health, personal devellopment aand other characterristics whhich belonng to meental healtth. Nowaadays we underrstand thee major roole of well-being aat work, oor the impportance oof a low stress in educaation. Thiss is why wwe consideer that we have to inntegrate mmultiple faccets of thee “mental healthh” conceptt in a harmmonious annd useful mmodel. Whhat if a peerson has aa good psyychologicaal balance and, implicitly, a goood mentaal health? Studies have inndicated that the persson will haave a high level of effficacy andd would bee a useful membber of the society. AA good leveel of mentaal health leeads to a fuunctional ssociety. Acccording too some pubblications,, mental hhealth referrs to “emootional, behhavioral aand social maturrity or noormality…a state off psycholoogical well-being inn which onne has acchieved a satisffactory inteegration of one's insstinctual ddrives acceeptable to bboth oneseelf and onne's social milieuu; an apppropriate bbalance off love, woork, and leeisure pursuits” (Meedilexiconn medical dictioonary). Baalance, matturity, norrmality andd well-beiing are proobably onee of the mmost used termss to characterize the mmental heaalth. Thhe modern approach of mentall health leaads us to tthe integraative vieww of this cooncept so we coould have a better aand complete undersstanding of the conccept and itts applicattions. We have invited unnder the mmental heallth umbrellla three sciences whhich probaably have the most poweerful impacct on humman life: pssychology,, medicinee and anthrropology. Thus was born the idea oof a complex conferrence on mmental health, using the above mentioneed major ddirections. We hhave receivved interesting papeers having different approachees and treaating subjects with majorr implicatiions on humman life. I wwould like to thank the authorrs, but also the scientific commmittee off the confeerence, as well as to the oorganizingg committeee. I hope that the ppublished papers will contribuute to the scienttific development off mental heealth conceept, both ffrrom theoreetical and ppractical vview. Proofessor Criistian VASSILE, Ph.DD. Bucuresti, 39, 1006880, Ploiesti, RRomania Naturral Sciences Museum, Prrahova Counnty, Ploiesti, Romania Internatiional Societyy for Appliedd Psychologyy Abstraact Mentaal health is a very compleex concept aand should be understoodd from multiiple views. FFor instance,, the World Healthh Organizatiion define it as “a statte of well-being in whiich every inndividual reealizes his oor her own potential, can copee with the nnormal stressses of life, caan work prooductively annd fruitfully,, and is ablee to make a contribbution to heer or his commmunity”. TThis major cconcept shouuld be analyyzed and coonsidered forr diagnosis when appropriate using multiiple views: ppsychologicaal, medical and anthroppological (inncluding the social and culturaal aspects). WWe can discuuss about meental health using biomeedical terms, as well as wwe can discuuss in terms of subjjective beliefs, social norms and envvironmental sstress. Keywoords: mental health; psycchology; medicine; anthrropology 1. Inttroductionn “WWhy are soome peoplee healthy and otherss not? It sseems a siimple quesstion. The answers, howeever, are coomplex annd have to do not only with dissease and illness, buut also withh who we are, wwhere we live and wwork, and tthe social and econoomic policcies of our governmeent, all of whichh play a roole in deterrmining ouur health.”” (Institutee of Mediciine, 2003) Deefining meental healtth is veryy difficult, even wee already have somme well esstablished generral definitiions. For instance, tthe Worldd Health OOrganizatioon define this conceept as “a state of well-beeing in whhich every individuall realizes hhis or her own potenntial, can ccope with the nnormal streesses of llife, can wwork prodductively aand fruitfuully, and is able too make a contriibution to her or hiis commuunity” (WHHO 2014). Accordinng to Meddilexicon'ss medical dictioonary, menntal healthh is "emottional, behhavioral, aand sociall maturityy or normaality; the absennce of a mmental or behavioral disorder; aa state of ppsychologgical well-bbeing in wwhich one has aachieved a satisfactoory integraation of onne's instincctual drivees acceptabble to bothh oneself and oone's sociall milieu; ann appropriiate balancce of love, work, andd leisure puursuits". Thhe oppositee of mentaal health, mmental illnness, is diaagnosed acccording tto the classification systemm of thee Diagnostic and SStatistical Manual of Mentaal Disordeers (DSM) or the Internnational Classificatioon of Diseeases (ICDD). So in practice thee most useed items inn order to makee a diagnoostic are thhe biomeddical ones.. This wayy ICD, foor instancee, could bee applied everyywhere in tthe world aand it’s alrready recoognized forr its successs in most of the casees. ∗ Correesponding autthor.
