But in the new children's book My Four Lions (Annick Press, $7.95), lions are the cherished companions and protectors of a little boy who regularly arrives home after school to an empty apartment, waiting for his mother to return from work. The boy shares pizza with his imaginary friends, the four lions, and tells them stories to keep them brave. The touching fable was written by Montreal writer and poet Bernice Gold, BFA 84, her first venture into children's literature. The illustrations, by Kingston artist and librarian Joanne Stanbridge, MA 88, convey the right tone of beauty and loneliness. The com bined words and pictures result in a gentle, moving work. For the past several years, Montreal photographer Linda Rutenberg, BA 74, MFA 86, has end- · lessly wandered Mount Royal Park, camera in hand, capturing the mountain and its visitors in both its glorious and intimate moments. In Mount Royal (Les Amis de la Montagne, $50), Rutenberg' artistic composition and use of infrared photography lends familiar Mount Royal sites and scenes - the Cross, Beaver Lake, runners, Tam Tam partiers - a never-seen-before feel. Coupled with prose and poetry by the likes of A.M. Klein and Yvon Deschamps, Mount Royal provides a fresh and elegant take on the city's centrepiece.
