TheDenisonoftodaybearslittlephysicalresemblancetotheinstitutioninitsearliestyears, yetthereisan importantcontinuityfromthose times tothe present. From its beginning, the Collegehas been committed toserving society'sneedforeducation. Ithas endeavoredto be, in the words ofits firsttrustees, "auseful Institutionsuitedtothewants,andcalculatedtopromotethewelfare,ofarapidlygrowingandfreecountry." FoundedinDecember 1831 bytheOhioBaptistEducation Society,theschoolwasoriginallyknownasthe GranvilleLiteraryandTheologicalInstitution;ithelditsfirstclassesinthelocalBaptistchurch.Ayearlaterit wasabletomovetoitsintendedfarmsiteamilewestofthevillage,anditsfirstthreestudentsweregraduated in 1840.ThenamewaslegallychangedtoGranvilleCollegefiveyearslater.By 1854thetrusteeshadagreed notonlytomovetheschooltothepresentsiteonahilloverlookingthevillage,butalsotonameitDenison UniversityinhonorofWilliamS.Denison,aresidentofneighboringMuskingumCountywhohadpledged $10,000toacrucialendowmentcampaign. Bytheterm "university"thetrusteesthenmeantthatDenisonwouldofferseveraldifferentcoursesofstudy, includingworkinthesciencesleadingto"thedegreeofBachelorofScience,alreadyadoptedinsomeofthe easterncolleges."Graduateprogramsleadingtoamaster'sdegreewereadoptedin 1887,butbythelate1920s Denisonbecame,bychoice,solelyanundergraduateinstitution. Coeducationcameaboutgraduallyaswell.InDecember1832GranvillesaddlerCharlesSawyerhadfounded the Granville Female Seminary on what is now Denison's Lower Campus. In 1861 those buildings were soldtotheYoungLadies' Institute,atwo-year-oldBaptist-sponsoredenterprise,andby 1866someInstitute women were welcomed in classes "on the hill." Renamed Shepardson College for Women in 1886 at the retirementofthe Institute's beloved president, the Rev. Daniel Shepardson, this old "Upper Sem" became partofDenisonUniversityin 1900.In 1927thetwoweremergedunderoneboardof36trustees. Denison University Mission Statement Ourpurposeistoinspireandeducateourstudentstobecomeautonomousthinkers,discerningmoralagents andactivecitizensofademocratic society.Throughanemphasisonactivelearning, weengagestudentsin theliberalarts,whichfostersself-determinationanddemonstratesthetransformativepowerofeducation.We envision ourstudents' lives as baseduponrational choice, a firm beliefin human dignity andcompassion unlimitedbycultural,racial,sexual,religiousoreconomicbarriers,anddirectedtowardanengagementwith thecentralissuesofourtime. Approvalofaproposalforamajorwillbebasedon the followingcriteria: Atleast20%ofthetotalnumberofhourstakenbythestudentmustbeintheprogramdeclaredasamajor. Whilethereisnoupperlimitonthetotalnumberofcourseswhichmaybetakeninanindividuallydesigns major,astudentmaytakenomorethan40hoursinonedepartmentfortheBAandBSdegree. The choice ofthe individually designed majoris subject to the approval ofthe adviserand the Academi AffairsCouncil.Thestudentshouldbesponsoredbyanadviserandotherfacultyconsultantsastheydee necessary.Themajorshouldincludeatleastfivecoursesthatareotherthandirectedorindependentstudies. Themajorshouldalsoincludeatleastonedirectedorindependentstudysuitabletotheareaofthepropose program. Individually DesignedMajorsapprovedin the lastfewyears includethefollowingtitles: "HealthScience,' "Psychobiology," "LanguageinitsSocialContext," "TheRhetoricofPhysicalScience,"and"ExercisePhys iology." Aminorshallhavetwo-thirds thenumberofcourses thatarerequiredforamajor, ornofewerthan 19 credit-hours. 2.Thereshallbestructurefortheminorasdeterminedbythedepartment. Inotherwords,aminorshallnot bemadeupofrandomlyselectedcourses. 3. Ifpossible, a department shall have some special requirement for students electing the minor, such as participation in the senior seminar, special comprehensive examination questions, or similarrequirements correspondingtotherequirementsforthemajor. AccordingtotheAcademicAffairsCouncil,nodepartmentorprogramisrequiredtodevelopaprogramof minors. The Concentration DenisonUniversityalsooffersconcentrationsinafewuniqueareas.Aconcentrationisacollectionofcourses prescribedbythefacultyonaparticulartopicortheme.Itcomplementsamajorfieldofstudyandisaffixed tothatmajoronthestudent'sofficialtranscript. Concentrationsareofferedinthefollowingareas:Geophysics,LatinAmericanandCaribbeanStudies,Neu- roscienceandQueerStudies.Studentsinterestedinthesefieldsshouldtalkwithappropriatefacultysoonafter theyhavebeguntheirDenisoncareers. Graduation Requirements I Earn 127semesterhoursofcredit; Earnacumulativegrade-pointaverageofatleast2.0,bothoverallandinthemajorandminorfields; Take approximately 13 courses from a variety ofareas ofknowledge as a part ofthe General Education I program; GraduationRequirements Majorinsomearea-eitherinadepartment,aprogram,oranindividually-designedarea; Successfullycompleteacomprehensiveexperienceincertainmajorfields; ResideatDenisonforthetwosemestersofthesenioryear.TobeacandidateforaDenisondegree,astudent must complete at least one-halfofthe required 127 credithours in residence atDenison. To satisfactorily complete a major at Denison, at least one-halfofthe credit hours that fulfill majorrequirements must be completed in residence atDenison. To satisfactorily complete aminoratDenison, atleastone-halfofthe credithoursthatfulfillminorrequirementsmustbecompletedinresidenceatDenison.Generally,allstudents, exceptthoseenrolledinrecognizedpre-professional3-2programs,mustcompletethelasttwosemestersin residence at Denison. Exceptions to these requirements may be made by the Registrar's Advisory Board. A course taken "in residence" is defined as any course scheduled by the Denison registrar and taught on the Denison campus, or any course scheduled by the Denison registrar and taught off-campus by a full- time Denison faculty member. This policy prescribes a university-wide minimum residence requirement; individualdepartmentsmayhavestricterrequirements. Please note that qualifications and further clarification ofthese requirements appear in various following sections. These requirements apply to all students, unless otherwise noted in the following sections. Note exceptions,inparticular,forBachelorofFineArtscandidates. Assessment ofAcademic Programs UndertheguidelinessetforthbytheNorthCentralAssociationofColleges,Denisonisestablishingasetof programstoevaluatetheachievementofoureducationalgoals. Theseprograms willcontinually assessthe outcomesofstudentlearningintermsofthestatedobjectivesofthegeneraleducationprogramandthemajor. Degrees Available at Denison Bachelor ofArts A candidate forthe BachelorofArts degree who majors in one department must successfully complete a minimumof24semester-hours ofwork. Themaximumnumberofcredithours whichmaybetakeninthe majorbytheendofthejunioryearis32.Hoursinthemajorinexcessof32attheendofthejunioryearwill notcounttowardthedegree. Thesemaximumsdonotapplytoaninterdepartmentalorindividuallydesignedmajor. Maximumsinthese casesaretobeworkedoutwiththestudent'sadviserandothers.
