Indeed, one of the earliest manifestations of a consultation forum was staged in 1954. At a meeting in Rio Pedras, sponsored by the Theological Education Fund of the World Council of Churches, ecumenical theological education was a primary concern. At that meeting it was decided that theological education was to be seen as a vehicle for the development of the Caribbean and, further, that this goal was best achieved on a cooperative basis. It is clear that a significant motivation for the future direction of ecumenical theological education came from that meeting. In many ways, this forum may be regarded as an imposition from outside the Caribbean as it arose out of a concern of external funding agencies I Production /ix
