The beginnings of this book go back to 1979, when I produced an
editionoftheOldEnglishGospelofPseudo-Matthew,underthesupervision
of Eric Stanley, for the M.Litt. Qualifying examination in Oxford; this
was carefully corrected by the late Eric Dobson, whose comments were
