We were within twenty miles of my parents’ home in Decatur, Illinois. My four- year-old son Kevin had been talking non-stop for two thousand miles. Then, without warning, he fell asleep. “Kevin!” my dad shouted. “NOW you decide to take a nap?! NOW!?! Twenty miles from the house?!” Of course, Dad was joking…I think! Now Kevin is ten. He has been full of questions since the day he learned to talk. (In fact, for years, even his statements turned into questions. They always ended with “Right, Mommy?”) After ten years, we (his immediate family) finally got smart! On road trips that involve more than one car, we usually manage to put him in the other car! In March of this year, we were on one such road trip. Kevin was riding with his Uncle Chris while I was enjoying a nice, relaxing drive with two of my sisters and several of our children. Soon we got a call from Chris: “Why didn’t you tell me about Kevin’s book?” “What book?” I was genuinely confused. “3,000 Questions to Ask on a Road Trip!” 1 Kevin, Kristie, and Alicia Johnson Of course, the book did not exist. Kevin just made up a title to explain how he managed to come up with so many questions. The trip continued without incident for several more miles. Then Chris called again to “share” Kevin’s latest question: “Wouldn’t it be awful if every time you fell asleep, you got electrocuted?” Yes, that would be awful. Thus, this book was born. Kevin, his sisters, and I have all racked our brains and done some research to come up with over 3,000 questions which, we hope, will entertain everyone in the vehicle. If we manage to get your mind off the price of gasoline for a few miles so that you can actually enjoy your road trip, this book will have been a success! You may notice that Kevin’s dad has not contributed any questions to this book. He is busy driving a truck. When he retired from the United States Air Force early this year, he got a job with a trucking company which allowed him to take his children on road trips. Unfortunately, his current job doesn’t allow any such thing. Hmmmm…. 2 Kristie Questions Kristie (Kevin’s twelve-year-old sister) has made contributions throughout this book, which is organized into various categories of questions. Her initial group of questions, however, stands alone! It doesn’t fit into any category. That is why we call it Kristie Questions! Note: To enjoy the full flavor of these questions, be sure to ask them with lots of energy, in rapid succession! (It also wouldn’t hurt to throw in a bit of suspicion on occasion if the question warrants it!) 1. How come we never go fast during rush hour? 2. Why can’t I have a puppy? 3. Can I staple my thumb? 4. Can I staple your thumb? 5. Why do I have to apologize for stapling his thumb? 6. What’s the value of a dollar? 7. Can you spend it? 8. How do you turn off a baby? 9.
