In this, our third joint effort, I am again privileged to be associated with this brilliant artist as both collaborator and friend. The impressive avian research facilities of the Kalamazoo Nature Center were graciously placed at our disposal by staff personnel. I am fortunate to have enlisted the time and critical expertise of three notable bird researchers. Raymond J. Adams, Jr., one of this nation's outstanding field ornithologists, is research director of the Kalamazoo Nature Center; Dr. Richard Brewer, professor emeritus of biology at Western Michigan University, is a well- known author, ornithologist, and ecologist; and James Granlund, curator of birds at the Kalamazoo Nature Center, is a science teacher, skilled field and museum ornithologist, and author. Each has read the text of this book and offered useful suggestions and comments, for which I am profoundly grateful. The final result, of course, does not necessarily reflect, indicate, or imply their approval of everything I have written. For that, I alone accept full blame and responsibility. My friend Jacqueline Ladwein helped find and photograph many nests in the field. The steadfast enthusiasm and companionship of this teacher, naturalist, and fine field observer have enhanced my own outdoor work and pleasure for many years. Likewise I appreciate the many days and hours spent afield with Calvin J. Everly, a science teacher whose knowledge, eyesight, and bottomless humor have enlivened the ultimate quest. < previous page page_xi next page >
