Description:It is late October in the California Sierra country, the hunting season is about to start, and after a long, hot summer the mountains are tinder-dry. Every forest ranger is on the lookout for what may be the fatal spark. Into this country come three men hired to murder a woman.
She is Martha Neilson Cope, head of the Neilson Electronic Works, on a camping trip with her husband. The killers’ plan is simple: the gunman will force her to run into the mountains and there shoot her down as though she were the victim of a hunter’s bullet. Then the inevitable autumn thunderstorm strikes and a lightning bolt finds its target. Fire snoulders in the roots of a tree, reaches dry grass, and spreads throughout the canyon.
The forest rangers, faced with the hazardous task of quelling a fire which a tragic chain of events has allowed to get out of control, are already stretched to the limit when Martha Cope, on the run from the gunman, is trapped in the forest's fiery heart. Nor is Martha the only creature to be trapped.
The graceful, golden-brown puma, queen of the forest, has also been caught by the fire and plays her part in a finale which demonstrates to the full Pat Stadley’s marvellous facility for handling the lore of woods and storms and fires, and the evil ways of man.
