Dear Mr. Gibson and Selection Committee Members:
ASD, Rogers Partners and Ken Smith - The Pier Park Team - presents a design approach and
vision focused on “how it works” as much, if not more than “how it looks”. This team has been
working together to develop these concepts since The Pier Park competition. We understand the
mechanics of the Pier District and our vision incorporates all of the goals and elements of the
master plan. It is this head start that will allow us, like no other team, to fulfill the City’s goal of
designing, permitting, and constructing The Pier Park and Pier Approach for one ribbon cutting.
ASD will continue to serve as the Prime Firm and Executive Architect, Rogers Partners will
lead planning and design and Ken Smith will lead landscape design. We recognize that the
Pier Approach requires additional consultants to deliver a thoughtful and cohesive solution.
Our approach presents the same Pier Park team along with George F. Young for Traffic
Engineering, Survey and Utility Location Support, VoltAir for Electrical Engineering, and Vistra
Communications to assist B2 Communications with public outreach and communications.
Our design approach extends the experiential excitement of public programs, compelling
landscape, and provocative architecture from Beach Drive to the Pier Park terminus. We love
and understand public space and recognize how design affects long term success – from simple
material choices to event infrastructure that delights and performs.
We look forward to the opportunity to share our vision and concepts with the City of St.
Petersburg in more detail in the next stages of the selection process. From the Pier Approach, to
the Pier Head and within every experience along the way, we are passionate about our vision and
commitment to the City in creating an iconic and revitalized St. Petersburg waterfront.
