Caregivers is a not-for-profitorganization whose purpose is to assistthe residents ofSandwich in maintaining independence and dignitywithin their home and community. Volunteerservices include, butare notlimited to, transportation, home visits, respite care, household chores, and telephone reassurance. When they started in 1992 Caregivers handled an average ofsix assists per month. They have since morethan tripled theirvolumeto abouttwenty assists permonth. Sixty volunteers serve morethan twenty-five care- receivers each year. Togetherthey offermorethan 2,000 hours ofservice per 3- year, make an average of75trips permonth, and log morethan 20,000 mile peryear! In the pastyear, sixteen caregivers have donated morethan 500 miles, and ofthose sixteen, seven have driven morethan 1,000 miles in service. Fourofthe care-receivers have benefited from 200-300 hours of assistance in the pastyear. This allov^s themto remain in their homes and as members ofthe community. Clearlythese people have recognized and honored a need in the town in an innovative effortthat has strengthened the community in many ways. They fosterpersonal relationships among people who mightotherwise remain strangers, they bring comfort, assurance, and securityto many in need, and they offer affirmation, peace, and dignity in times ofweakness and crisis. Not leastofall, the growth ofthis organization demonstrates how volunteers in service inspire others to serve. How a communitycaresforits own speaks volumes aboutthe quality oflifeto be found there...the efforts ofthis group have become an integral partofwhatwe believe makes Sandwich a special place in which to live.
