WOLFE [188], son of Mystery-Father COFFEE/UNKNOWN [308] and Mila "Milly" WOLFE [362], was born on 14 Sep 1858 in Hancock Co, TN and died on 14 Aug 1932 in Melissa, Collin Co, Texas at age 73. General Notes: ----There is some indication from U.S. Census that his birthyear may be 1854, but the 1900 Census shows the 4 being changed to an 8.----- Collected from Telephone Conversation with Ernest Smith, who is Jon Wolfe's 9th cousin Wolfe Family Crest August 17, 2012 This overrides all of the speculation that follows. George Franklin Wolfe 1812-1885 had several children two of whom were Mila "Milly" Wolfe 1838- and Manson Elijah Wolfe 1842-1917 Manson Elijah Wolfe had a daughter named Nancy E. Wolfe 1877-1960 who married Benjamin Priest Moore 1865-1937 Two of their daughters were Mary Bernice 1913-2006 and Juanita R 1915-2008 After their husbands died they lived together west of White Rock Lake before you get to Highway 75. These two women were the daughters of James Wolfe's first cousin=Nancy E. Wolfe Moore. He was their second cousin and they all lived around each other in or near Grayson, Collin and Denton Counties. Ernest Smith, who is our 9th cousin via Manson Wolfe and has been researching the family since the 1960s, spoke and met with them several times and they said the following. James Wolfe is the illegitemate son of Mila Wolfe-the daughter of George Franklin Wolfe and Produced by: Jon Wolfe : 29 Nov 2012 4 Produced by Legacy 7.5 Ancestors of Thelma Ruby WOLFE their great-aunt = sister of their grandfather, Manson Elijah Wolfe. In the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census, Rebecca Coffey was asked how many children she had and she replied 7 and 3 are still alive. The three that were still alive were from her marriage to Nathan Perry Dalton. All children with Adam Wolfe, Jr.-including James A Wolfe-were dead. The Children of George Franklin Wolfe Compiled By Ernest W. Smith from Ancestory.com Wolfe history written in the 1890's and oral family history lists the children of Jane and George Franklin Wolfe as: Emanuel, Gideon, Mila, Manson, Wiley, and Jeptha. Manson Wolfe's daughter, Nancy Elizabeth bares witness that this is the complete and only list of the children of Jane and George Franklin Wolfe. Others have added these extra children to the family of George Franklin Wolfe: Mariah, Nancy, Lily, James, George W. and Thomas G. Mariah, Lily, and Nancy: A close look at the original 1850 Census will reveal the mistake of the transcriber of the names Emanuel and Wiley as Mariah and Lily. Manson is also misnamed as Nancy in the 1850 census; this explains him missing in the 1850 census, and Nancy missing in the other census. James: James Wolfe is in the 1870 census of Hancock County with the family of George F. Wolfe. Some individuals have him as George F.'s son. However known family history does not list him as such. His family was always told that James was illegitimate. His family History reveals that he believed that his name should have been Coffee. Some individuals believe that he was the son of Mila (WOLFE) and William Marion Coffee who were married when James was 19 years old. However, William could not be the father of James as he was only 6 years old when James was born. James would have been born when Mila was 17 years old, not married and living at home in 1855. The 1870 census lists Mila still living at home. Produced by: Jon Wolfe : 29 Nov 2012 5 Produced by Legacy 7.5 Ancestors of Thelma Ruby WOLFE George W. and Thomas G. Wolfe: George W. and Thomas G. Wolfe are the sons of Gideon Wolfe and the grandsons of George Franklin Wolfe. ======================================================= ============ SPECULATIONS and Aunt Lizzie Dictations ======================================================= ============ Could Roland be his father's last name rather than his middle name. Census has him as James W Wolf, James Wolf, Jim Wolf, James Wolfe 1910 Census show him living in Tennessee. 1920 Census show him living in Van Alstyne, TX There seem to be three possibilities about "our" James Wolfe 1. Wolfe was his step-father's name or 2. Wolfe was his mother's maiden name or 3. Coffee was his mother's maiden name We are not sure which story is the correct one. Number 1 is the most probable from the Aunt Lizzie set of papers found in her trunk after her death. But it is also possible that this Wolfe who "took him in" was actually his grandfather George Franklin Wolfe who was caring for him as a grandson rather than as a son. In other words 1. would be a Wolfe who took him in but not a step- father. This also would match with the Aunt Lizzie papers. Another way at looking at "our " James Wolfe is in above number 1. his father is Coffee in above number 2. his father is Coffee in above number 3. his father is Unknown Name Grandpa Wolfe-James Roland Wolfe?-only child at that time out of wedlock. The man wouldn't mary the mother. (Other story says he died on the job of delivering mail). She had two daughter. (Were they born before or after James Wolfe?). Our name should have been Coffee. The following sounds too muck like the story about his wife and sister- in-law. In this version it's about his two sisters, one of whom just happens to have the same name as his sister-in-law, and just happens to also marry a Holt. I suspect that this story is also about his wife and sister-in-law. James Wolfe-his mother and father were fishing. A boat came by and they gave his two sisters (or are they half-sisterss) away. One was named Betty. The other name is unknown. Betty Holt got back with the family. James Wolfe was born out of wedlock. His mother was a Coffee.
