architecture and the need to deploy Pico sites at the street level, create new challenges of deploying wireless backhaul links in Non-Line-of- Sight (NLOS) conditions. In NLOS conditions, the signal propagation is blocked by street obstacles (e.g. buildings, furniture, poles, trees, hills) and propagates in use cases of diffractions, reflections or penetrations. The received signal is a superposition of multi paths and there is a very wide variance of the received signal strength and its distortions. Deploying backhaul system in NLOS conditions is a new challenge due to the need to bridge between the inherent uncertainties in the NLOS propagation conditions from one side and the strict requirements of the Mobile Operators to get a Carrier-Grade solution from the other side. Addressing this challenge requires innovative technologies to resolve the following:  Provide the required capacity for today and tomorrow needs.  Comply with the KPIs for service availability, latency, jitter and quality of services  Meet street level requirements such as small form factor and low power  Provide ease of installation, operation and maintenance  Provide simple means for planning at certainty level that enables to engage in site acquisition  Provide simple, accurate and low costs solution for site survey and installation in NLOS conditions  Maintain the backhaul performance and meet the required KPIs in a dynamic changes environment at the street level Addressing these challenges is essential to provide the required performance and the operational viability to make NLOS backhaul deployment a wide scale solution for Small Cell application. One of ALCATEL-LUCENT's dedicated tools for addressing NLOS challenges, is the Smart Beam Forming Antenna: It assures very high performance and flexibility in the system deployment - it increases the system gain, enables higher order of MIMO (3X3), simplifies the installation by implementing automatic antenna alignment, and it supports Interference Rejection by aligning the antenna pattern. ALCATEL-LUCENT's Smart Beam Forming Antenna (SBFA) also supports Advanced Jan 2016 MPT-SUB6 Technical Solution Confidential © Alcatel-Lucent 2016 Manual 5 / 60 Antenna Steering mechanism which automatically steers the antenna in the best direction and thus, the link achieves best performance (such as throughput and latency). Moreover, the Advanced Antenna Steering mechanism allows interference cancellation. This mechanism has significant impact on the efficient use of the spectrum, the optimization of service quality, higher capacity and improved robustness. In this document we describe how ALCATEL-LUCENT addresses these challenges with a set of innovative technologies incorporated in the products portfolio successfully responding to the operational needs of planning, installation and maintenance. The document provides a comprehensive description of ALCATEL-LUCENT’s SCBH systems: Architecture, Supported Bands & Regulations, System Description, Innovative Technologies & Features and Concept. 2 Concept The MPT-SUB6 introduces a NLOS backhaul solution that supports a net throughput of up to 350Mbps in a single 40MHz channel. The product’s high quality performance in NLOS conditions is achieved by two layers in the radio:  MIMO / OFDM based PHY  Proprietary advanced & robust Air Interface The core competence of the air-interface is its dynamic adaptation, in a resolution of frame by frame, to the instantaneous changes in the link conditions optimizing the system performance to achieve maximum and stable capacity along with minimum latency. In addition, the MPT-SUB6 introduces a Smart Beam Forming Antenna which enables the following capabilities:  Increases system gain  MIMO 3x3  Beam forming  Multipath aggregation  Interference cancellation by aligning the Smart Beam Forming antenna patterns  Automatic alignment Beam Forming and Interference Cancellation mechanisms are operative during antenna Jan 2016 MPT-SUB6 Technical Solution Confidential © Alcatel-Lucent 2016 Manual 6 / 60 alignment. The radio finds the best path for the two spatial streams along with a shaped pattern in order to overcome any existing interference and thus achieve the best link performance. It simplifies operation and removes the dependency on installation skills and accuracy as installation is automatic. The air-interface controls the Modem and the Smart Beam Forming Antenna and adopts them in accordance with the dynamic changes in the channels. As an example, the air interface adopts the MIMO mode, the Modulation Coding Scheme (MCS), Guard time Interval and configures the antenna-phase-weight shaping the antenna patterns in order to maximize the system gain. Their combined contributions are essential to overcome the NLOS deployment challenges. The MPT-SUB6 radio is optimized for urban NLOS backhaul of small cells. 2.1 Planning & Operating under NLOS conditions The MPT-SUB6 addresses the challenges of planning and operating under NLOS conditions in two main aspects: 1. By offering robust NLOS Backhaul radio solutions which are capable of mitigating the harsh installations environment and adapt to the rapid urban changes: Multipath and interferences 2. By providing deterministic prediction tools for the RF planning, allowing the service provider to minimize the risks involved in mass deployment in the urban environment. Planning a PtP link and PtMP sector under NLOS conditions is achieved with ALCATEL-LUCENT's unique NLOS planning solutions:  Fully automatic  Customized for ALCATEL-LUCENT’s proprietary technology  Accurate Service performance calculations and SLA based on wave propagation and ALCATEL-LUCENT System’s specific characteristics and topology (Band, PtP, PtMP)  Providing tools for qualifying BH sites  Optimal automatic association between Small-Cells and Donors/Aggregation points based on System topology, service requirements and SLA The initial planning is exported as a work order to support the next step – an efficient and fast site survey. With ALCATEL-LUCENT 's unique Site-Survey tool, information is collected, validated and then fed into ALCATEL-LUCENT 's RF Planning tool to allow composing the final Planning Report. Jan 2016 MPT-SUB6 Technical Solution Confidential © Alcatel-Lucent 2016 Manual 7 / 60 Thus, the final Planning Report provides deterministic prediction and reliable plan for the NLOS Backhaul system deployment. 2.2 The Alcatel-Lucent Survey Kit: The Site Survey kit is used as an integral part of the planning and prediction process for NLOS small cell backhaul deployment at the street level. The installer carries out a site survey based on site information obtained from the ALCATEL-LUCENT planning tool. The kit is designed to make the survey process accurate, smooth and rapid. It is intended for use at sites to be operated in the 3.xGHz or 5.xGHz bands. The kit includes the MPT-SUB6 radio with an integrated Smart Beam Forming Antenna and an extendable battery pack (no need for an external power supply!). The kit also includes a tablet with an embedded dedicated management & survey application. The application provides for easy performance evaluation: spectrum analysis and link performance monitoring & recording. The kit is offered in four versions: FCC and ETSI for 5.xGHz and 3.xGHz. The kit provides for one side of a surveyed link. 2.3 The MPT-SUB6 - PtMP Solution: The MPT-SUB6 consists of an HBS sector radio and up to four remote radios (High Capacity SUs – HSUs). The MPT-SUB6 radio employs a TDMA technology and it supports a sector throughput of up to 350Mbps net aggregate traffic at 40MHz channel BW. Allocation of sector traffic is carried out as follows: 1. The user configures the minimum number of time slots to support the required SLA service (Assured Throughput) 2. ALCATEL-LUCENT's DBA (Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation) increases the actual throughput by allocating unused time slots of inactive radios 3. ALCATEL-LUCENT 's unique DBA algorithm guarantees that service will not suffer degradation when other radios in the sector suffer decline of link properties. 2.4 The MPT-SUB6 - PtP Solution: A PtP architecture is established using the same HBS sector radio remote radio (HSU) listed above in the PtMP solution. PtP connectivity is achieved thanks to the following features: Jan 2016 MPT-SUB6 Technical Solution Confidential © Alcatel-Lucent 2016 Manual 8 / 60 1. ALCATEL-LUCENT's management applications allow allocating the entire sector capacity (time slots) to a single remote radio (HSU) 2. ALCATEL-LUCENT's Smart beam Forming Antennas at both ends shape the radiated pattern automatically to provide directional PtP link The MPT-SUB6 can be managed locally and remotely via EMS (Manager), and can be integrated with the ALCATEL-LUCENT 5620 SAM.
