The route is a 10km (6.2 miles) walk along trails and streets circling Lake Hood Seaplane Base, the largest seaplane base in the world. The trail passes through general aviation areas at the Anchorage International Airport. The route continues to Earthquake Park, a site commemorating the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, with great views of the Cook Inlet, Mt. Susistna, and Mt. McKinley. Walkers must register in advance)- The Start Point is at the Denali National Park Visitors Center [238 miles north of Anchorage---124 miles south of Fairbanks]. Please be aware that due to the distance from Anchorage, there is no Walk Box at the Visitors Center. To obtain the walk directions, walkers must register in advance by submitting a signed Liability Release to the point of contact for the walk. Walkers requesting insert card(s) for completing the walk must also submit $3.00 for each walker. For those visitors arriving by train, the Start Point is a short distance from the Alaska Railroad Station in the Park. Event Info: This is a beautiful walk through the entrance area of Denali National Park. All but 2 km are within Denali National Park and Preserve. The Route uses both bike paths and wooded trails to explore the Park entrance area. Highlights include the Visitor Center campus complex, the Nenana River bridge crossing, the Jonesville Trail cut- off to the Park, the Taiga Trail, and the Horseshoe Lake trail. Continue on straight, cross the bridge and go straight through one more light. At the third traffic light, you have reached the Eagle River Road. Make a right on to Eagle River Road and follow the road to the end, 12 miles into the valley. The Nature Center is at the end of the road. $5 per car parking fee at Nature Center parking lot. No public transportation. Event Info: Description: Trails are accessible 24 hours/day but start points hours of operation are: May through September on Wednesday through Sunday from 10am-5pm; Closed Mondays and Tuesdays. October through April on Friday through Sunday from 10am-5pm; Closed Monday-Thursday. Closed on most major holidays. Call 907-694-2108 to verify. You will discover the beauty of the Eagle River Valley as you begin your drive along Eagle River Road. At the log cabin Nature Center, ask for the plastic, 12-inch square "walk box" at the staffed front desk; the box is on the first shelf below the counter and marked "Walk Box". This moderately challenging walk is on well-maintained trails within Chugach State Park and meanders through a river valley shaded by cottonwoods and birch and bordered by picturesque mountains. Enjoy walking a portion of the original Iditarod Trail and seeing the rapids of glacial-fed Eagle River; look closely and you may see bird species to add to your life list, moose or bear along the trail or beavers in ponds with breathtaking views of often snow-clad, glacially-carved mountains in the background. Trail is an easy walk along sidewalks, paved bike trails and some road shoulders. The route leads you through some of the most historical areas of Fairbanks. Most of the trail is on paved bike trails, sidewalks and roads. Parts of it are on grass, gravel and a forested trail with exposed roots. No steep hills. Route includes parts of the Alyeska Ski area, the Girdwood Town Site, school, library and the unique Athabascan Nature Trail. Park in lot on side of building, if possible. Event Info: Dawn to dusk. Registration box below counter under lottery machine-ask clerk. Elevation at start point is 4,800 ft. Route is along paved streets & on sidewalks w/one noticeable incline. Route features panoramic view of San Pedro River Valley & the chance to see several very long freight trains pass through the town. Count the number of churches along the route in this prime example of "small town USA." 5 km trail is rated 1A. 10 km trail crosses double set of train tracks twice. This walk is in Cochise County-the only county in the USA named for an individual Native American, plus Benson is a person's name. There are 15 murals within one block of the start point. Experience two sets of the town's famous stairs. Trail provides opportunity to thoroughly explore this former copper mining town turned artist colony. The Woodlands Trail walk is on a rails-to-trails walking path of the Arizona Lumber and Timber Company roadbed used from 1902 - 1966. It goes from the edge of Flagstaff through a pine forest to a county park. The return offers views of the San Francisco peaks, the highest points in Arizona. The route is a combination of city sidewalks and the Lake Overlook Trail, a fairly easy desert hike. The Lake Overlook Trail is an interface of urban- desert, so while you see the city you are also surrounded by desert mountains. You will see a variety of cacti and other desert flora; and you might spot quail, cactus wrens, lizards, javelina, cottontail and jack rabbits, coyotes, and even an occasional bald eagle. The trail also allows a view of the fountain for which Fountain Hills was named. At the top of each hour, it sprays a 300-500 foot plume of water for fifteen minutes (wind permitting).
