The Author Roger L. Wabeke, board certified since 1973 in comprehensive industrial hygiene practice, has 33 years of professional experience. His primary interests are chemical safety engineering and occupational toxicology. His undergraduate education and training were in biology and chemistry. His graduate studies led to a Master of Science degree in Occupational and Environmental Health and a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, both from Wayne State University, Detroit, MI. He is board certified (Master’s level) in hazardous materials management. Mr. Wabeke is an adjunct professor in the Departments of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine and in Pharmacy and Allied Health and Community Health at Wayne State. He has authored many publications in areas of his professional interests. Currently, he is a principal Investigator in a major National Cancer Institute case-control research project study ing the occupational epidemiology of prostate cancer. He is a member of several professional organizations and, over the years, has received many distinguished appointments and awards. During his career, Mr. Wabeke evaluated and controlled exposures of many thousands of workers to chemical and physical agents in numerous, diverse work places. He consults for the chemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and nuclear energy industries: the military: academic institutions: healthcare facilities: environ mental pollution control projects: real estate and financial institutions: and airline, trucking, maritime shipping, and pipeline transportation companies, among others. He practiced industrial hygiene for five years for BASF Corp., a major chemical manufacturing company. He was an industrial hygienist for 16 years for Ford Motor Co., 10 of which he was supervisor of industrial hygiene for worldwide operations. Since 1987, he has been president of Chemical Risk Management, an environmental and occupational health consulting firm with offices and laboratory in Detroit and Dearborn, MI. Author Disclaimer Conscientious effort was made to ensure that the contents of this handbook and every problem, in particular, are technically accurate, complete, and useful in the day-to-day practice of contemporary industrial hygiene. All calculations and prob lems were critically peer reviewed. However, when many thousands of information items are entered into a published work, a few typographical errors can result even with the best effort of everyone involved in the process. To ensure completeness and accuracy of the calculations, users are encouraged to send corrections, additions, and comments which enhance the usefulness of this handbook to the author or to the publisher. Roger L. Wabeke Detroit, Ml Preface Man is here for the sake of other men, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Albert Einstein — Several problems and calculations in this handbook were developed initially to assist industrial hygienists preparing for their board certification examinations. After the author passed his board certification examinations in Boston in 1973, he and several other certified industrial hygienists organized a one-day, admittedly crude, review course for others who were preparing for their examinations. The course was offered semiannually, on Saturday, at Wayne State University College of Medicine in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health. The Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society provided free refreshments. The registrants and instructors brought “brown bag” lunches. There were no fees for this course, and the instructors provided pro bono lectures. Nine discussion rubrics covered air sampling and analysis, ven tilation, toxicology, calculations, radiation, respiratory protection, industrial hygiene chemistry, noise, and heat stress. With no more than 50 minutes for each subject, only industrial hygiene “pearls” could be presented. Today, of course, there are several high quality one-week review courses offered around the country for a substantial fee. The depth and scope of these courses are now far more encompassing and preparative. Many of the problems in this book were acquired during the author’s career from resolving actual industrial hygiene exposure issues including evaluations of numerous workplace poisonings and fatalities. A few were provided over the years by present and former colleagues, mentors, and students far too numerous to mention. Still others served as the basis for homework assignments and examination questions for students in classes which the author presented at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Henry Ford Community College, and the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
