Key LepidoplerTai,neidaeG,erontha, China. words new species, Introdllction The genus Geivntha was established by Walker in 1864 with Ge]z,nth acaptiosella XNTalket, 1864 as type species, and redescribed thoroughly by Diakonoff (1968 ).Twenty-two nomi- nal species are hithert oincluded in this genus (Meyric k1,928; Diakonoff, 1968; Zagulajev, 1972; Moriuti,1977, l989a, b;Petersen,1987;Robinson& Tuck,1996;Ponomarenko& Park, 1996), and excepting G. acrosthenia Zagulaje vfrom New Guinea (Zagula j1e9v7,2) and Australia (Robinso n& Nielsen ,1993) ,almost all the species are knewn from the Orienta lRegion to East Asia. In China, Gervntha hoenei Petersen ,1987 was reported from YUnnan and Zhejian gProvinces, and G, dracuncul aMeyrick, 1928 from Taiwan. Up to the present ,no Gerontha species have been recorded from Hainan Island , One Geivntha species collected in our survey of Lepidoptera in Hainan lsland was considered to be new to science, The terminology used in descriptio nofs morphology follow sRobinson & Nielsen (1993). Geronthaflexur asp. noy. (Fig s1-2) Male (Fi g1.) .Wingspan 29.3-29.9 mm. Length of fbrewing 13,3-13, 9mm, Length of an- tenna>8.0 mm (anten bnraoken). Head. Compound eyes large ,Vertex covered with dense erect yellow hair smixed with dark brown. Antenna filifor msc;ape dark brown; flagellu pmale ochreous, Frons with dark brown hairs .Maxillar ypalpus blackis hbrown. Labial palpu gclothed ventrally with long blackis hbrown hairs t;hird segment dark brown with apex yellow, medially ringed with yel- low.Thorax. Dorsum dark purplish-fuscous .Fore- and midlegs extensively covered with dark brown scales; hindle gdark black lateral lwiyth long purplish-fusco huasirs .Forewing elon- gate bearin gshort fringe sonly at termen, 4.4-4.5 times as long as wide; upperside yellow- ish brown in ground color, irrorat ewdith black scales, forming one large black area at the axillary region and three black dots from the end of the cell to near the apex. Saccus long and slender, about 1.2 times valva in ]ength . Valva basa lhalf quadrate, dista lhalf tongue-shaped, slightly constricted at middle; dorso-proxim albase with curved arm ending in a large spindlc-shaped process; ventral margin medially with a small process ;inner sidc with a distin ckteel from base of the arm to the small precess of the ventral margin. Juxta absent, Aedeagus slender, about as long as 1.4 times valva, near- ly straight, curved ventrally near the apex; cornutus absent. Femaleunknown. From the Latin (=bendin gre)ferring to the aedeagus which is nearly .flexttra straight and curved ventrally near the apex. Remarks, Gerontha in species are often very closely similar superficial appearance and separation is sometimes extremely diracul etven based on the genita lcharacters, The new species is similar to G. dracuncul aMeyrick, 1928 from India (Andaman Islands) and G, amplipteiu Ponomarenko & Park, 1996 from Korea in having a simple uncus not produced into paire dlobes and a gnathos which is very weakly sclerotized or absent in the male geni- talia. OTI the basi sof the materials , the new species is distinguishable from G.4毋 c醐 c〃α by the slender aedeagus curved ventrally near the apex , and by the spindle−shaped proces sarising 仕om the dorso−proximal base of the valva , while in G. d厂α一 cunc ”la, the aedeagus is al皿 ost straight and the proces sis club −lik ewith an apical triangu− larhook.
