SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (Sony Pictures) – 7/5/19 Director: John Watts Starring: Tom Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal Considering where we last saw our friendly neighborhood web-slinger, “far” seems like a bit of an understatement. Created by by Team Team Click Click COMIC-CON 2018 THE GUIDE SUPERHERO SHOWDOWN There have been nearly 40 superhero films from Marvel & DC alone in the last ten years, in addition to numerous TV shows. Many abs will be on display, begging the question: how do you do sit-ups under water? WONDER WOMAN 1984 (Warner Bros.) –11/1/19 Director: Patty Jenkins Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Pedro Pascal, Kristen Wiig We are getting a Wonder Woman movie set in the era of big hair and Cold Wars. The first image from the set is, naturally, in a mall where Diana is hopefully shopping for satin tights to wear while fighting for our rights (and the old red, white, and bluuuuuuue…). SHAZAM! (Warner Bros.) – 4/5/19 Director: David F. Sandberg Starring: Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Adam Brody, Djimon Hounsou “How cool would it be to be able to fly and have super strength like Superman!” “What are you, 12?” “…Yes.” Fun Fact: Shazam is not his name. You know, like Link isn’t Zelda. OK, not exactly like that. It’s Captain Marvel. But not the Carol Danvers one. Never mind, just go see it. Created by Team Click COMIC-CON 2018 THE GUIDE ALL THE WORLD LEGENDS TIME IN OF THEDC SWAMP THING (DC Universe) – 2019 Alec Holland fuses with supernatural plant forces to become the Swamp Thing, as the famous comic book character returns to television. We love to see DC planting the seeds for new character growth in an environment where they can really put down roots and bloom. SUICIDE SQUAD 2 (Warner Bros.) – 2019 TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES (Warner Bros.) – 7/27/18 Directors: Aaron Horvath, Peter Rida Michail Starring: Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Will Arnett, Tara Strong It’s the Teen Titans vs Deadpool in the summer mash-up of the century! <Whispers from side.> Sorry, DEATHSTROKE. Not Deadpool. Aw, yeah, Titans! TITANS (DC Universe) – 2018 Creators: Greg Berlanti, Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns Starring: Brenton Thwaites, Teagan Croft, Anna Diop, Lindsey Gort, Minka Kelly Robin, Raven, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Hawk & Dove kick off the series, but rumor has it there will be even more characters featured. Our fingers are crossed for Baby Wildebeast! 9 Director: Gavin O’Connor Starring: Margot Robbie, Dwayne Johnson, Joel Kinnaman, Jared Leto, Will Smith, Karen Fukuhara, Joseph Oliveira Word on the street is that The Rock might make his DC Universe debut as Black Adam this time around, which would be pretty much the opposite of suicide for box office results. DOOM PATROL (DC Universe) – 2019 Starring: Bruno Bichir, April Bowlby, Jake Michaels, Dwain Murphy Not all superheroes are mighty pillars of truth and justice. Some are quite a bit more…broken. Enter this rag-tag team of misfits, scarred both physically and mentally, who unite to investigate weird phenomena and help others like themselves. COMIC-CON 2018 THE GUIDE CLICK PICKS WHAT WE’RE CURRENTLY READING All-New Wolverine/Old Man Logan – What is old is new is… well, the original Wolverine died, so these two series follow the tales of the original Logan’s daughter, Laura, and a future alternate-reality version of himself. Bitch Planet – If you’ve been watching the Handmaid’s Tale wishing you could see those women rise up against their dystopic patriarchal oppressors and f--- some s--- up, then this is your new favorite comic. DC Bombshells – Set during World War II, this reimagines all your favorite DC super hero women with more victory rolls and red lipstick, though their butt-kicking prowess remains the same. Detective Comics – This most recent series has collected a group of Bat-allies like Cassandra Cain and Batwoman, along with Clayface, who has a pretty great character arc as we learn that the longer he’s in clay form, the more…malleable his moral compass becomes. Injustice: Gods Among Us – Based on the popular game, this series imagines a world where Superman is traumatized to the point that he decides pre-emptive and permanent justice is better. Batman, of course, disagrees and their world is torn asunder as the two sides battle it out. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur – The Marvel Team-Up we never knew we totally needed: a young super genius and a giant red dinosaur. Fun, fantastical stuff like this is kind of why we read comics in the first place. Ms. Marvel – Kamala Khan blends the duality and teen angst of Spider-Man with the unfailing sincerity and conscientiousness of Wonder Woman. Books with her in them are fantastic, e.g. Champions, which also features Miles Morales, another of our faves. Saga – We could say this is NOT a gorgeously-rendered series that blends mindbending sci-fi with action, adventure, and romance, but then we’d be lying. Tiny Titans – Robin, Superboy, Wonder Girl and many more can be found on these pages battling dirty bedrooms, playground bullies, and falling ice cream. They’re great for the little heroes in your life. AW YEAH TITANS! Note: Both DC & Marvel have rebooted many of their books in the past year and it’s a great jumping-on point for fans of different characters in the superhero universes, as many of them are quite good.
