Basic Lunar Facts 1. It is important to remember that we can only see one side of the moon. 2. This occurs because the amount of time required for the moon to rotate, or turn on its axis, is equal to the length of time required for the moon to re- volve around the Earth. 3. The hemisphere of the moon that reflects sunlight is white on the diagram. 4. When studying the diagram of the moon, keep in mind that we can only see the white portion between the Earth and the moon’s orbit. 5. When we see a full moon we are actually seeing only half of the moon. The other half is the dark side of the moon. So, the quarter moon is half of a half and that equals a quarter. 6. The first quarter moon and the last quarter moon are mirror images of each other. 7. The lunar cycle is 28 days. 8. Waxing means growing. 9. Gibbous means swollen on one side 10.Waning means shrinking. 11. Why is it called a quarter moon? *Remember we only see half of the moon even when it’s full. ½ of a ½=¼) Directions: Cut out the Phases of the moon on the right and the lunar phase names at the bottom.
